judaz,
No guarantees but although not ski in ski out Montgenevre would fit your other criteria with a decent early season snow record, plenty of self catering , good reds and blues. I have only visited on day trips so can't comment on apres though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yeah, a tall order - we are limited to the holiday period like many due to teenagers' exams but don't want to miss out on skiiing this season, Christmas week is looking the cheapest of the holiday weeks (1/2 term and New Year's weeks the only other two choices!)

Hi rob@rar - yes Easter is possible. Would this be a better option?

judaz, as good as Christmas, and quite possibly better. Certainly longer days, probably slightly warmer temperatures, etc. My advice would be to head high, although that would apply at Christmas as well.

These days with the season getting later and later I think Easter is a better bet for snow than Christmas and certainly more likely to get sun. (There is still some good snow in the Alps now, though the lifts have closed). Just don't go low.

jms, for the budget you have you could have some fantastic catered chalets with food and wine included plus use of hot tub, sauna etc. food would all be included so no trapesing around restaurants or cooking yourselves. There are some superb chalets out there and not just those "pretending" to offer the service and cuisine - some really top brands should come into the equation for true luxury.

that is where we stayed at christmas. There is also tour op chalets which are ski/out.
The apres ski is pretty quiet to be honest. It is a more family orientated resort.
At those prices you're willing to pay you have a lot of options available.

ok! i would think at least 3 of us would love to do the valee blanche, but wed get over it if we couldnt! convenience not all that important, the skiings the thing! How does chamonix rate against somewhere like zermatt? Im beginning to like the sound of it.. |
Re Chamonix or Zermatt,i found chamonix to be very over rated, the town is a bit run down, but expensive, and you have to get a packed bus to the slopes.Zermatt is by far the better resort, only reached by a cog driven train, giving great views on the way up.Tha town is very olde world, wuth all buildings in the Swiss chalet style(even Macdonalds)Battery operated cabs get you about, and you can ski back to town.If you get a full area pass you can ski down into Cervenia(Italy)which is good also.Alan

skiingpepsi, Welcome to 's. Both are good places but both are inconvenient for skiing!
