Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any bad points about staying there in comparison to VT or Les Menuires?

Snow reliability & very quiet in the evenings are the main downsides. However, much prettier with a villagey atmosphere.

St Martin has a Michelin starred restaurant.......so much nicer than the normal resort restaurant and of course, when the geeks wink aren't there, the Oxylass in Val Thorens also has a Michelin starred restaurant Very Happy

BernardC, thinking of going for week in february with husband and 15 year old son and possibly one of his friends. We do blues/reds - they do reds/blacks! Not really fussed about apres ski - usually too tired but do like a few nice places to eat out. Was thinking of VT but worried slightly by it being exposed, wind etc. We usually go to Tignes and have been to Morzine and Chamonix but would like to try somewhere different and thought it looked nice french atmosphere.

Disadvantages? Yes, but it's so much more peaceful than the main 3v resorts.

beautiful, but a drag lift out of village and a couple of lifts to get high up. check the piste map to ensure it is okay for your party.

my favourite restaurant in the 3V's is there though, but im not telling Toofy Grin

Couple of years ago, we we had skied down and there was a 30 minutes queue at the second stage lift (I think) We had 3 bad queues mount vallon, Cimes caron cable car and st martin de belleville when staying there.

That said lots of pros great home run, nice authentic village. I'd happily stay there

dan100, forgot acout that and your right that is a problem in St martin...

the bubble out of the village is an 8 seater and when you get out you have to get on a 4 man chair to get further up the valley and some big queues occur when its busy.....

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

That's what happened . we'd skied down there proably pre lunch from courchevel 1850 and it took a long time to get back up. great out of the village but stuck a long time at the 4 man chair. definitely needs a 6 man chair there or second gondola

Lovely run (Jerusalem?) down to village

Stayed there a couple of times and really liked it - because was quiet.

ruthie, I prefer Courchevel to Val Thorens. A good range of terrain for al grades of skier, some great ski schools, a bit less bleak if the weather is poor, a good reputation for snow management, and easy access to the rest of the Trois Vallees if lots of mileage is important to you.

ruthie, You don't have to spend a fortune there if you don't want to, but it is certainly not a cheap resort. I've stayed there a lot, usually in moderately priced chalets avoiding the very expensive bars and restaurants - the result has been reasonably priced holidays in a first class ski resort. From a purely ski perspective it's hard to find significant fault with it.

iruthie, agree with rob and IMO the best all round skiing in the 3 V's great pistes for all abilities and not expensive if you know what to avoid...

Any cons totally outweighed by pros. Snowmaking ensures run back to village is ok even if a bit slushy late pm, but youcan always take the bubble if you don't like skiing in slush. Queues at chair may occur after lunch but never first thing and you don't need to come back down till the end of the day. From top of chair the whole of 3 valleys is open to you. Several great home runs - Jerusalem, Pramint , Grand Lac. Lovely little village with good choice of restaurants and for the gourmets La Bouite at St Marcel was actually awarded its second Michelin star in February this year. A great dining experience but only once a year on my budget even though we were staying only two doors away this year! My non-skiing wife said it was fun to watch the obviously wealthy "skiers" arrive in the restaurant's 4x4 for lunch and then leave in a helicopter from the field opposite at about 4.30 presumably it being too late to ski back to Courchevel.

St Martin is not ideal for beginers as the runs into the village are fairly stiff for lower level skiers. Snow reliability? We'll it is about the same height as Meribel and no one ever seems to question that as a reason not to go there. The gondola whisks you up pretty high in a few minutes though so no problem. Personally I would much rather stay here than VT or Les Manure-heap! It has character, feels french, and is quieter.

Out on the edge of the 3v ski area and the local skiing fairly gentle but a very nice village with good restaurants and lots of generally open, easy off piste to try. A bit of an off-piste adventure is to ski off the back of La Masse and ski back to St Martin. You will probably be the only people in an empty valley most of the way.

Nickster, None of us are beginners so that wouldn't be a problem. St Martin just appeals to us for the very reasons your mention. snowball, Yes it seems a bit at the end of the 3v so probably won't get to see as much as if we stayed in Meribel or somewhere but then to us its more than just skiing, we like french village atmosphere and the nice scenery so will prob go there.
Now all i have to do is find somewhere to stay preferably apartment.

ruthie, there are some really nice apartments in St Martin with access to pool and spa facilities and at decent prices -try the MGM apartments. Good luck.

ruthie, St Martin one of my favourites, lovely welcoming people, authentic town that is the Valley town that runs Les M and Val T infrastructure - real people here, great runs homewards and easy links to the 3V - Meribel in 40 mins, Courchevel in twice that, ditto Val T, BUT its a long way back from Val T, and can get closed in in bad weather. Don't worry about snow reliability, we have visited in a snow drought 1/2 term and had good artificial snow on the home runs, and in Mid April - ditto. Extensive supermarket, good butcher, local restos good value, but not very exciting apart from the one skimottaret, mentions

Edit - we stayed here - very nice and central, 3 mins to the drag lift, ski shop and supermarket, good bar downstairs. It has recently changed hands so I don't know how much sprucing up they have had.
