Hi
Me and son want to go skiing in Feb half term next year
Not particularly fussed where we go or what it costs - we've got the time and money, I can probably get by in French and German
I'm 39, last time I went skiing was when I was 10 - my son is 11 and has never been skiing before
We will be hitting the dry slopes here this summer and we're both confident of our skiing abilities, but it's a little bit daunting going on our first ski trip, just the two of us
We're both confident and outgoing people, fun and friendly, and I'm sure we'll hook up with other people out there, but we're never done a ski holiday before so we'd rather hook up with other people here and travel together and ski together
I know a lot of other people willing to have a holiday in the sun, but not willing to "throw themselves down a mountain strapped to 2 planks of wood" LOL
We're in Croydon / Surrey - we've mostly normal and fun and mostly harmless!
Anyone interested in joining us?

TrueBlue69, welcome. I'm sure you'll find like-minded people on here. It's actually appealing to people like me where me and son like to ski but wife and daughter would probably prefer to go somewhere else like a foreign city and shop (or whatever it is they get up to). I reckon there are loads of temporary single parents out there. Other thing to watch out for is the alledged Snowheads Family Bash. Best of luck.

couple of dry slopes nearby, but more likely to find ski buddies on here than on a dry slope
i'm more than happy to go with "temporary" single parents - after all, it's just the "going with someone" rather than going alone - so anyone looking for ski buddies is good with us
by the way, i'm 38, last time i went skiing i was 10 - i loved it and coped fine
my son is 11, very sporty, will be his first time skiing and i'm sure he'll cope fine
we'll be getting some practise in on the dry slopes over the summer, either at bromley/swanley or sandown
oh, and we're going skiing with or without ski buddies - but would be nicer to go in a group!

TrueBlue69, I've been away with my 12 year old daughter about 6 times in the last 4 years, usually as a single parent (although my ex has come a couple of times). We find it works pretty well and we've ranged from holidays when we've met lots of other families to others where we've pretty much skied together, just the 2 of us, helps that we ski pretty much to the same standard. These have been to Norway, France and Canada. Afraid we're already booked to go to Zermatt next February half term. I'm sure you'll sort something out and have a great time.

We went with Le Ski [although I think the same may be true of any of the catered companies/chalets] over last year, in a catered share chalet. We shared with a father and his 9 year old daughter. The guy takes her each year, apparently. We didn't know them before and it worked well..
IMO most people are fairly normal and whilst it may not work this is an unlikely event.
His daughter got on with my daughter. He had some adults to talk to later and have a laugh with so all in all good..
Le ski were very open as I was looking for a chalet with children of similar ages to my daughter so you may want to try that route

If you can't find anybody to travel with before you go I'd second cfc5mu0, on the chalet option. We've travelled with skibeat a lot and seen single skiers or one parent plus kid(s) work quite well. It can be posible to find a chalet where other similar aged children will be staying and that way you will have company without effort. However, I think this option works best where you are an experienced skier so can join the other guests being guided by the chalet host around the mountain. You need to be red run competent which is unlikley if youu haven't skied since you were 10.
Another alternative could be to look at snowbizz. We have used them for the last 2 years as they work very well with english children. Children and adult lessons are at the same time and only snowbizz customers use the ski school. Our children very quickly made friends and we very quickly met new people in the ski school and as the parents of childrens friends. Within a couple of days you start to feel like you know everybody on the mountain. In additon they have a family guiding programme in the afternoon where the children head off with the instructors and the parents try to keep up. There is also a kids club in the evening. There are only a handful of restaurants so even if you were eating by yourself you would probably meet people you had skied with and wouldn't be eating alone for long. We met a number of one parent one kid skiing families there over the last two year and it wasn't just single Dads either if that makes the idea sound more enticing  .

TrueBlue69, I've been with my (now six year old) daughter, as a "single" parent as the wife doesn't ski, for the last couple of years with Ski Esprit a specialist family company. It's worked very well and in the past there have been other "single" parents. As a person whose been on chalet holidays on my own in the past it's not a great deal different and have always managed to find someone to ski with and had a great time. Just seen as you've changed the thread title, no matters it has worked quite well for me. Now looking at booking for next season. PM me if you want any more details.

cheers for the advice guys - brilliant stuff
i've looked at snowcoach and it sounds ideal - everyone with the same tour operator, out and back same time, the party night etc etc - sounds very sociable
i will look at the other alternatives too before i book anything
i went to several travel agents and none of them had anything like this - i was thinking we'd just have to book a hotel somewhere and take a chance that there would be other english speakers and other people to ski with !
if anyone has other suggestions / recommendations, please let me know!

TrueBlue69, I've just booked again with Ski Esprit now that I've found out that they're still doing decent 1 parent 1 child deals. But they are limited in terms of rooms and offer. If you want I can PM you a list of chalets they do it in as it's not on their website at present and then you can compare the chalets to the deals on kids. Hope this helps.

You would at least have met them before you actually go away with them, and would know for sure, that you had shared interests! Just a thought....... Good luck anyway 
and had a great time. I wouldnt recomend the coach but they do flights (which is what we did) as well and they are geared up for all ages of kids.
