Any really clever wheezes about what to do when your kids are too old to share a hotel (or apartment or chalet) room? My kids are 14, and the daughter is getting fed up with sharing a room with her bro, and I don't blame her. They shared this year on ski hol, but next season they'll be nearly 15. We're taking a 2 bedroom apartment in a hotel in the summer and shelling out for a single hotel room, and for next ski hol I think we've found somewhere which does single rooms for little more than half a double.
3 bedroom apartments in ski resorts seem to be like hen's teeth. What to do in the future? I'll have to share with my son and the OL with the daughter, I suppose. Great. Anybody found a better solution; we can't be the only ones with this problem?

Ray Zorro, good thought. It's not actually the gender issue that's the problem, more that the daughter demands privacy for chilling out purposes, although if they were of the same gender, it would be easier to say, 'Lump it.'. The novelty of sharing a room with a chum would probably do it. Not sure whether we have any friends who completely fit the bill, but it's a good idea.

richmond, friends have a three bed apartment upstairs from ours. You can see it at www.eurekaski.com/accommodation.htm . It is La Guisane. The alternative would be a one bedroom with two cabines, one for daughter and one for son. As we have two of the same sex, it has never been something that occured to us as a problem, and we have lots of mixed-sex families staying here too. It is me that needs somewhere to chill when the kids are with us.

richmond, Whilst I appreciate your problem, I would be likely to adopt the attitude of if you want to go skiing then you have to share and get on with it. It's only one week for heavens sake. If they want privacy then they will have to work it out between themselves. Skiing is an expensive enough business without having to pander to teenage whims.

'Like it, lump it or stay at home.' is my instinctive respsonse, and the daughter would definitely lump it rather than stay at home. She hasn't made a big deal of it, and I have some sympathy with her wish for a bit of privacy. If we can find a low cost solution, so much the better. Next year's putative hotel charges only a little more for singles than for it's cheapest doubles, which is fine, and the single we're getting this summer is cheap enough.
Helen Beaumont, I think it is a girl thing. My son is perfectly happy to share; he has the male ability to ignore the rest of the world when it suits him, however intrusive it's being.

Lump it - if I'm reading things right they shared a womb she should be able to stick a week in the same room
(if you must pander buy her headphones and an eyemask so she can "chill out" in solitude).

That'd work fine, but the trouble is an apartment of that size in most resorts would be regarded as sleeping at least 6, very possibly more, bunging the cost up with under occupancy supplements. Still, we can't have it both ways.

We can offer apartments with one or two bedrooms, plus either a cabine or sofabed and the cost is the same regardless of whether you fill it to capacity or not, so much depends on your budget - this means different things to differnt people! PM me if you thik it may help and I'll be happy to drop you some details on possibles

richmond, if you rent an apartment from owners, or through resort websites, you'll pay for the apartment, regardless of how underoccupied it might be. It is generally cheaper, too, and there is absolutely loads of choice. Same applies if you use Erna Low, if you prefer to deal with a UK operator.
The problem with sleeping in sitting room is when the occupant is slow about getting up in the mornings, and getting their bed put away. You need an early rising keen skier on the sofa bed, then it works fine! When teenagers staying with us are slow about getting themselves going in the morning I put on some of my classic French café songs, loud. They always moan like hell, and I tell them they'll get switched off when the last one's out of bed. It never fails.

pam w, the son's a keen skier, but none of us are morning people (not very efficient on a skiing hol). We've never done a DIY apartment, only hotels. It could be the way forward.
