Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Quick question on ski lengths

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm keen to get a pair of fat skis. I've seen some where I like the reviews and the price seems pretty good. But I'm not quite sure of the appropriate lengths. I'm 168cm, my carvers are 161. I've read that for off piste one should be looking at head height, but that twin tips ski short. So would a twin tip ski at 172 be too long, too short, or just right?
I know I should test them first, but the shop might have sold out before I get a chance to!

vetski,

If you ski confidently and quite well...that lenght in TT should be ok..IMV...for Off-Piste

JT, confidently yes. Quite well, only sometimes! I think confidence outweighs ability... I'm not bad, I coped with and enjoyed La Grave, but that was my first experience of gnarly stuff. Loved it, will do more, and think the chance to snap up a pair of Punishers with S710 bindings for £200 too good to miss! But only 172 and 182 available.

at that price, if you hate them you should be able to sell on at no or v little loss.

i'm looking for a pair for my missus, care to share where skis are selling for such a good price? promise not to buy the punisher!!!

kitenski, sorry, only just back from the unmentionable bash. I got them from Edge to Edge - www.edge2edge.co.uk. My Punishers are being held for me and have been paid for, so if there are some left, go ahead! Telemark Pyrenees also have pretty competitive prices, so I gather.

I'm 168, 70kg, got a pair of 172 Punishers and wouldn't want any longer. Can ski anything pretty well. Punishers no problem off-piste - best skis I've had and good on-piste in moguls etc, but think 182s would have been harder work for quick turns. Depends how you ski, if you just want to ski fast and make big turns, then 182s would pretty much blast anything, but i can't shrug off the habit of quick turns and figure 8s...

footsoldier, thanks, & welcome to snowHeads if you're a recent joiner (though I'm going only by post count here - pleasure to meet you new or not!). 172s do sound better for me, I like big fast turns, need to work on my short turns though they're improving, but do not want a ski that will only make big turns, cos it's so much harder to avoid trees that way... Smile

vetski, depends on what you want the skis for (but guessing mainly off-piste), having seen you ski at a couple of unmentionables, I would suggest the 182s as the running length will be at least 10 shorter than the actual length tip to tail.

Hofmeister, too late, 172s arrived this morning, but ta for the input. My piste skis are 161, and I like the length, so I figured an effective length of 162-ish would be OK. Time will tell!! I think you're safe to mention the bashes, no sign of boredsurfin here!

I thought you would have gone for the ZAG lady golds that you tested.

kiwi1, am on my knees evey night praying that I win them as the review prize. I bought the Punishers before I tried the Zags, and they were only £200 with bindings (ex-rental, you see)...but God, those Zags were incredible. Does any shop in the universe have them as rentals?

vetski, Oh I see. I read your test card and it sounded like true love. The lady golds were one of the stand out skis of the test. You'll be able to get the zags through 47 degrees but I've no idea who rents them out.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

vetski, I'm a bit smaller than you - my first phatties (now Tele) were 168 - they felt too short..now I have 181s - on big days they feel just right snowHead

ski, interesting. The Zags I refer to above - and yes, it was true love - were 165. I took them into pow, and they were ridiculous amounts of fun. If the Punishers don't suit at 172, I may have to turn them tele and add another pair to the quiver. Life's tough. Very Happy

curiously enough I use exactly the same rational justification when making another incremental ski purchase wink
