Poster: A snowHead

British explorer Ben Saunders has called off his attempt to become the fastest man to reach the North Pole alone and unaided. When his ski bindings sheared off on Thursday, he realised it would be impossible. By then, he had covered 60 miles in 8 days. Saunders thinks his bindings broke because of "the unprecedented, appalling conditions of the ice" as he tried to drag his 65 kilo s ledge over mini mountains of ice rubble....He has not been put off by his experience though, and plans to walk to the South Pole and back from Berkner Island on his own later this year.

Earlier in March another British explorer, Hannah McKeand, had to call off her attempt to become the first woman to reach the North Pole alone and unaided after injuring herself.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Are these people really explorers? They may be exploring, for themselves, but do they contribute to the sum of human knowledge? I think 'adventurers' would be a more accurate description.

You need to Login to know who's really who.

Looking at his Flickr account (nice bike, Ben!) it looks like he uses Nordic SNS bindings |
That's clearly where he went wrong. Should've had a pair of Sally 920s on there, no chance of them breaking! True, he'd have sunk through the snow and ice with the weight of them, but hey, who says you have to get there above ground?
