Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Gets, Portes du Soleil - TR

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Been back nearly a week now and this is the first opportunity to have an extended visit to the PC.

Had a great time. Minor delay on the way out but, surprisingly, EJ and Liverpool airport proved queue free.

Picked up by Alpine Elements at GVA and bussed to Les Gets. All very relaxed and well organised.

Stayed in Chalet La Seigneurie which is about 5 mins walk up the hill from the post office. Chalet was fine though a little on the compact and bijoux side especially for 8 adults and 9 kids. However, it was clean, warm and with a decent shower. The chalet hosts (Rhys and Alex) did a reasonable job of entertaining us. Food was ok, not gourmet but edible.

Hired skis from Sport 2000 opposite the Bellevue Hotel. Friendly and efficient service with the excellent feature of being able to leave outdoor shoes at the start of the day and skis and boots there at the end of the day. This made life much more pleasant for the kids and some of the adults. My daughter was in ski school with ESF from Monday to Friday. Being only 14 I thought she was due to be with other children however the instructor suggested that she join the adult class for greater enjoyment and a better learning experience. By the end of the week Sam was tackling the reds in the resort with a decent measure of control.

Weather was a mixed bag but never so bad as to stop the skiing and fun. Overcast and snowy Sunday to Wednesday with heavy snowfall all day on Tuesday. Thursday to Sunday lots of sunshine and the temperatures were creeping up. By Sunday the run back from Mont Chery to the town was very bare and slushy at the bottom. some of the lower runs in to Morzine were closed (bottom of the Pre Favre chairlift.

One of the most surprising things was that, apart from the bank holiday monday, there were no queues for any of the lifts and there were many occasions when the pistes were deserted.

I thought the skiing off La Rosta and Chamoissiere was the best of the runs in Les Gets. The kids enjoyed Piste B down to Morzine. The one day that the adults got away we managed to ski as far as Les Crosets in Switzerland with a detour to take in the Swiss Wall. I'd heard about this daunting run and was a bit apprehensive on taking in the view from the top of the run. Managed to ski down it without falling and in fact it was quite forgiving due to the recent heavy snow. The return to Les Gets from Avoriaz took in the Coupe du Monde run down to Les Prodain. Decision time - cable car back to Avoriaz or take the bus to Morzine. Opted for the bus and left my cagoule and goggles behind (ah well). A brilliant day out (Avoriaz is an ugly place tho')!

Since we were in a catered chalet we didn't get to try many of the in town restaurants. Lunch on the mountain was taken at one of the many self-service places since I didn't have the foresight to reserve a table at any of the better restaurants. However, the food was generally of a good standard and the views, especially from the snack bars at the top of La Rosta, were breathtaking.

Apres ski was usually taken in the Bush Bar or at the Bellevue near the ESF. Apart from that there was no real need to go in to town at night since we were well stocked with wine and beer in the Chalet.

My daughter and I sneaked in an extra day skiing on the sunday since our return flights were sunday night as opposed to Sunday morning. Alpine Elements could not transfer us back to GVA so we used the bus which travels from the town directly to the airport. 60euros for the two of us and a 1hr journey time. Flight home delayed by 1hr but was tucked up in my own bed by 1am on Monday morning.

All in all I'd definitiely re-visit Portes du Soleil and would also stay in Les Gets again. A super holiday.

A few pics are also included.

Jennyski, We spent two weeks in Les Gets last July/August - fabulous holiday! Loads to do, wonderful scenery everywhere you look, friendly people, nice little craft and specialist food shops and a pretty village centre which is pastly pedestrianised. You'll have and excellent time! Very Happy

Jennyski, agree with anniepen - we've been coming here (in LG now) for many trips in winter and came last August. Had a great time in village and many places to visit by car in area too. Highlights for us, kids were 12 and 8, were Adventure Park Chamonix Aiguille du Midi (not cheap but worth it on a fine day) and lots of walking. We had quite a bit of rain. We will come back in summer soon hopefully but not this year. Also would like to try white water rafting and going down to Lac Leman for boat trips etc. Very Happy
