Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

davidof, seen this before on a merc coupe, there's not enough meat in the roof between the front and rear windows to get enough clearance for the bindings into the rack. But yeah, he's probably spent more in wasted petrol than the cost of hiring skis in resort rolling eyes

But arn't those magnetic roof racks only safe up to 160km/h frontwards? Wouldn't these risk coming off at speed?

My missus was nearly speared by 5 pairs of skis coming off a magnetic roof carrier, like arrows, they was.

I once lost a Windsurfer that was badly secured by the wrong type of roof rack. First i knew about it was when looking in the rearview mirror to see it spinning back down to earth narrowly missing the car behind me. Laughing

SMALLZOOKEEPER, snapped a surfboard when one of the straps came loose. A friend of mine almost missed our trip as he's due in court for allegedly driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway to find some canoes that had fallen off the roof.

We were following a car one day with 3 bicyles upright on a roof rack. The whole lot came off the roof and planted itself in the road in front of us. It was a dual carriageway - we missed it, but not by much!!

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Last year I lost an Iron bed frame complete with roof rack, I still have sleepless nights remembering watching it disappear behind the car and the following vehicles swerving to avoid it.

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
Had a spring on a ski roof-rack fail once on the M6 during evening rush hour and saw my almost brand-new Rossi 7S fly off the top of the car and hit the car behind. The skis were run over hundreds of times, and it was quite scary at one point when an HGV's rear wheels caught one of the skis (or a large bit of it) and flipped it about 15 feet back up in the air, fortunately landing without hitting anything else. There was no way of retrieving them (I only wanted to see if the tip deflectors were salvageable), so after exchanging details with the driver of the car we hit (from whom we never heard a peep!) I think we phoned the police, who said they'd sort out clearing the debris from the motorway. Fortunately our household insurance paid up for a new pair, the roof rack was binned and a roof box purchased.

I used to ride an old BSA A65L up the M6 and across to Newcastle to college and to keep it running I bungee'd an old steel amo-box for all the tools and spares to the rack. Coming down Shap I noticed that it was missing so I took a long tour back around to try and find it . . . an hour and a half later I found the flattened lid, a couple of spanners and a loooong black smear of oil and cement dust Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed
