Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

FenlandSkier, That is one reason why, Since I got back I've had 1 can of beer (really had a taste for it last Saturday) and about 2-3 glasses of wine a week. Lost half a stone as well which I put down to the lack of drinking.

to be honest...
There are the Brits and then there is the rest of the skiing circus...

By comaprison to the avarage Britskier the rest of us are Teetotallers...
By personal example Brits have some special relationship to alcoholic beverages
They want Loads of it and they want in the shortest time possible, that seems to work on the Bristish isles.

However I think they drink loads and now because they are allergic to the continental alcoholic beverage
brits drink beer in headless pints (0.5l ) we drink it in halves (0.25l) with room for a head
So they take 2 halves but by the time they drank them they are 2 as drunk as from a single pint
so what is the matter with beer in the UK?

In the morning we (the lowlanders and the gerries) tend to rise early and be on the slope by 8
By the time the brits get on the slope thye look wasted and smell from the mouth like they are decomposing inside
Like on the costas by the time the brits get to the beach all the chairs are taken...

Nope of course this was a joke. I you go to certain skistations you will encounter the lager-lout-skier/boarder. but that doesn't mean all brits are like this most of you are quite civilised people.
However ther is some thruth to my message : brits should learn that we consume alcohol differently, and that alcohol served on the continent reacts differently.
Graham surely knows what i'm talking about

We drink with moderation but alcohol and skislopes usually don't mix well

Taken the pledge for a month in the off chance that I can shed some weight. This means my first drink will be in Santa Cristina on the 22nd (and my second, and third etc). But never met a teetotal skier or boarder, may have somthing to do with having pisshead friends.

Mmmmmm?
My experiences of skiing with a German ski class and the semi compulsory drinking session afterwards left me with the impression that I was a complete lightweight.

derekski, that wasn't the impression given by the Scanderswegians (Swedes mainly, I think) who flooded St Anton when we were there last month. They didn't seem to be at all nasty, but they drank a great deal and were noisy and inconsiderate (like most people who drink a great deal). Brits don't have a monopoly on getting pissed.

richmond, The thing about Scandinavians is that they go to the pub to get drunk, although many have a skinfull at home with their home made moonshine and beer because of the high tax in their homeland. The "Paddys and the Brits" go to the pub to have a drink and meet friends but it is mainly to socialise. The only saving grace is that the Scandinavians prefer to make love and not war when pissed! wink

That did seem to be high up their list, just below drinking more, in fact. Given their condition and the fact that most of them looked as if they lived in caves drinking beer and eating lard (which they probably do), I doubt that they were very successful.

On holiday I drink a couple of glasses of wine with my evening meal and probably a small beer after skiing . To drink so (relatively) little, though, requires saying no to offered drinks.
I rarely drink even this much at home - perhaps a glass or two of wine about once a week and perhaps a small whisky every couple of weeks - plus a half of beer in a pub if I go walking on an occasional weekend.

there are belgians and then there is the rest of northern europe..
by comparison to the average belgianer the rest of us are total warmongers..
the begians seem to have a special relationship with surrendering
they do it loads and often before the occupying army has even got its pants on and decided what direction they are headed in..

in the mornings they like to rise early to get all the german laundry in
by the time the brits arrive they smell like something has really let go in the pants department
its a bit like the previous bash where they are happy to host it but feel strangly uninvolved

of course this was a joke , if you go to switzerland you can find some other fence sitters
and a lot of belgians do actually have a spine
this however a kernal of truth in the fact that we brits do things a bit differently
and that quislings on the continent react differently
churchill knows what im talking about surely

Nothing is the matter with British beer, quite the opposite. It's like saying "Powder snow, whats up with that? Surely one run in a hour is good enough, you don't NEED to have any more that that, you'll get over excited and your legs will hurt tomorrow."

Nothing wrong with (traditional) beer in the UK, the UK has a great brewing heritage (as does Belgium of course) Very Happy

Hopefully there's a happy medium between being teetotal and spending all your time either reminding yourself and everybody else how much you drank last time or planning how much you're going to drink next time. Maybe one difference between the Brits and others is not how much they drink, but how much they talk about it, and how much of their self-image is dependent on it?

Where's that prissy smiley.....

The Danes take their binge drinking very seriously as well. Down town Copenhagen can be pretty scary in places early Satuardy and Sunday morning. Lovely people the Danes but boy are they loud with a drink inside them.

Megamum, I really enjoyed my brief spell in Copenhagen, I found the majority a real relaxed positive bunch of people always up for fun. Had a few iffy times due to the drinking but away from that good fun.

derekski, a pint is 0.57litres. Most of the traditional british ales (ie beers) I drink (Brakespeare, Abbot etc) are abou 5%. I know many Belgian beers are stronger (but the best Brit beers are just as tasty). Oh but it was all a joke anyway, wasn't it, so I expect you know all this. Personally I drink beer for the taste. If it tasted the same I would be as happy to drink it at 0%
A friend told me about the way the Japanese get out of the communal baths when a westerner gets in, making comments about aids. But of course they say later it is all a just a joke.

I have never been one for getting to pi55ed on my ski holidays.

The way I see it is I wait a whole year for one week away on the slopes. The last thing I want to do is spoil one
day of it with a stinking hangover.

Renry,
Couldn't agree more - can get drunk at home quite easily enough, no need to do it on a ski holiday when I really need my wits about me. A view confirmed by a friend's accident 3 years ago when he broke his collarbone in an accident that was imho somewhat due to too many genepis (?sp) at lunch time. Having said all that, nothing beats sitting on a terrace watching the sun go down over the slopes with cold beer in hand.

We tend to drink slightly different when skiing to say being on a summer holiday. Finish skiing around half 4 and head straight to the bar til about half 6/7. Back to the chalet to either eat or get changed and go back out for a meal and have a couple of drinks with dinner. Most of us are worn out and in bed for 11pm with not a sniff of a hangover because the drinking was done so early. A far cry from the days in Pas de la Casa or Alp D'Huez when I'd party til 4am and be on the slopes by 10am - body can't take it now Smile Mind you my latest last year was 1am (it was my birthday!) and the earliest *cough* half past 8.

One of our party actually fell asleep in his spag bol at 8pm. Lightweight Wink
