Poster: A snowHead

Hi
I'm off to Canada this weekend (woo!) but can't take my vise for in-resort servicing as it's way too heavy for the baggage allowance.
Has anyone got any tips about how to rig up a makeshift vise while I'm out there?
Cheers
Duncan

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

A couple of well trained marmots can come in handy (double up as hand warmers) - but apparetnly otters are not worth the extra expense.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

ski, I don't think he's going to Canada for the weekend, rather at the weekend. I may be wrong.

duncann, Just lean your skis up against a wall or balcony.

Yep, that's right, am going at the weekend for 10 days skiing, so would be nice to hotwax after 5 days or so but might just rely on Zardoz.
Not sure how easy marmots are to train, maybe I could persuade an elk to let me use it's antlers as a work bench.

duncann, been there, done that.
I dropped my skis into a rental shop for a wax only half way through the 10 days, cost $10CAN, so about a fiver. I took my small edge tuner and diamond stones with me as well, and did as rjs suggessted - lean ski tip against a wall with base facing outwards, hold the ski firmly and it's easy enough to make full length passes of the edges.
This was the technique our resident tunung guru spyderjon recommended to me.

duncann, as jmdohanlon, and rjs, suggest, lean skis against wall for edging and I always find if you want to wax them yourself you can arrange a couple of chairs/stools etc in such a way that the skis are about the right height on them to wax (ideally on the backs of 2 high backed chairs, one towards each end). This is how I did mine every week until last summer I finally bought a bench and vice just remember to cover seats with newspaper or something to avoid covering them in wax!

duncann, welcome to snowHeads. Hopefully the snow will be so fluffy you don't need anything more than the notwax.
Marmottes may not be available in Canada. Elk tend to run off with your skis.
Think Beaver. I know many snowHeads do...

stoatsbrother, marmots are available in Canada, I think; the ski area in Jasper is called Marmot Basin, possibly after a household utensil used for cleaning marmots in. Who wants a dirty marmot, after all? The same probably applies to beavers, which is why Native Americans in Colorado washed theirs in creeks.

duncann, welcome to snowHeads.
I use a couple of these to hold the ski for waxing, scraping & brushing etc.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

You don't need to wax mid-trip when going to Canada as the snow is generally so dry that the wax just lasts and lasts.
Unless you are going to Whistler of course where the snow (lower down) is commonly wet and will strip the wax in a few days: in which case use a rub-on wax daily, or drop it into a shop for a quick overnight wax.

Thanks for all the info everyone re wax, marmots, elk, vises etc. Didn't know about dryer snow not wearing out wax so quickly having only skied in Europe so far. Cheers all. D

duncann, I had an awesome 8 days in Fernie a few weeks back. Used notwax once, was fine.
richmond, ah ha - never seen a marmot there, but I am sure they exist. I haven't seen a drop-bear yet, after all.
