Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

XL boarder on M board?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm considering buying a second-hand board to complement the beginner board I already have... but the board I have my eye on is a 151. My current board is a 167, very forgiving but not that stable at speed and with no pop to speak of (annoying as I'm trying to learn to air). It's a no-name brand, but not a bad board for learning. I'm outgrowing it though...

For those who don't know, I'm 6'3 and ~250lb / 18st, so not a small guy. Am I likely to get any joy on a 151 (general running around the hill and some park/pipe - hard charging will be tricky on a smaller board) or will it constantly wash out? I realise the answer depends on the board (a Lib Tech designed for all-round use, no magnetraction though) and my skill (moderate but not fantastic).

Any thoughts appreciated Smile

Whacking your details into a t'internet snowboard length calculator comes up with this...

Height 6'1 - 6'5
Weight 211lbs +
Ability Intermediate

Freestyle 161

Obviously its only a guidance, but I'd guess from that that a 151 would be too short.*

*I'm not any kind of expert... I just thought the info might be useful.

Shallimus, I'd think you'd want to go a bit longer, especially if you want some all round use out of it: it would probably be just about ok for park use only though.

i think most boards and manufacturers provide a suggested weight range for each specific length and model of board. if you find a board you fancy check on the manufacturers website. generally i'd agree with the others on the 151

rogg, I'm not quite as weighty as you (just under 14st) but I moved from a 166 board to a 156. The shorter board feels much better suited to me, even though it goes against the 'rules'. Not quite sure a 151 would be that good for you but you'd certainly be okay with something about 156/157 IMO

Thanks all for your thoughts Happy I find out tomorrow if I can get it for the price I set for myself... perhaps it will allow my riding to develop in new ways?

I find myself agreeing with both those who say it's too short and those who say it might work. I'll report back once I've tried it if I buy the board.

(seems like I was just looking for justification to spend more money on snowboard stuff!? Wink )

Hopefully my experience will be of some use to someone, at any rate.

Special thanks to TristUK for finding and using a calculator wossname on my behalf... NehNeh

Will it be wide enough though?

Dunno. Time will tell as I've bought the thing and will be collecting it this evening Happy waist width is 246mm, so about 2cm shy of a Skunk Ape (my ultimate wishlist board, which is wide). Hopefully it'll be OK. 246mm seems fairly standard for average boards, and I don't think my current board is any much more than 255 or so (no-name brand so I can't check online).

You guys are as bad as the skiers.

No, a 151 would be like using snowblades. You will get laughed at.

You need something like a 174, stop being such a fag.

What about that tandem board in the Piste section??? Size matters. I would not like being in a Gondola and having a 12 year old with a bigger board than me, even if he did have a bit of bum fluff on his chin;-)

I hope Shallimus has not been allocated Igls for his trip, I saw it earlier and it looks like a 12 year olds chin or a 151 board, not a lot to see wink if you know what I mean

Touché.

Although it would be like using one snowblade, so you're wrong wink and needing a 174 is all very well (in fact I intend to buy a 180 or even a 190 Skunk Ape), but surely it depends what you're up to... or do you do the exact same thing every day you go snowboarding?

Additionally, I know three things for sure:
  • I will learn something from this experience, even if it's just that 151 is too small even for messing about on. Most likely even if it's hard to ride, some aspect of my riding will improve
  • With all gear, find out what's right for you. Feel free to ignore other people because although they might be right, they might be wrong. Having said that, I asked for opinions and I have 'em...
  • I have a cool-looking new Lib Tech board and if it's too small for me I know someone I can give it to who will be pleased as a pig in muck. Result: all's well that ends well one way or another...

I'll report back on the level of laughter and fag-ness once I've had a chance to try it out. At any rate, my money has rayscoops being right about the width as far more likely than any concerns about length.

When are you off Shallimus, i'll be interested to hear how you get on.

I think your probably right. It's not as if the snowboard going to stop working, it just might be more specialised for one purpose.

Have fun!
