Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Emergency HELP! Clean and Waterproof Hardshell - Urgent Response Needed Please

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have had a couple of Gore-Tex shells that I have tried to clean and treat in the past but they never seem to come back to their full waterproofing. I have used the NikWax Tech Wash and then let it dry naturally but it doesn't seem to come back. I was not able to put it in the tumble dryer as I can't control the temperature. (I once used a hairdryer to try and revive the beading but it didn't work)

I am now three days away from my trip and I have realised that my XCR Mountain Equipment Changabang hardshell needs cleaning as there is little to no beeding on the surface. I want to clean it and revive the waterproofness to what it was when I bought it, is this possible. They say that it is, but I don't know how to get there whithout effecting the breathability and improving the waterproofing, what would you suggest

THANK YOU

Powderhunter

Use natural soap flakes to wash it - the wash-in stuff coats the inside & outside, so it affects the breathability.
Once washed, spray it with re-proofer.

PowderHunter, Tech wash then Nikwax T.X direct http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=3&activityid=-1&itemid=-1&fabricid=-1

PowderHunter, wotHelen Beaumont says but natural drying only - dunno why, but direct heat seems to destroy waterproofing (hairdrying a jacket - cracking. And people thought I was nuts at school & uni for hairdrying underwear!). Good luck & have a great trip! snowHead

So it's you who is singlehandedly responsible for global warming. Well, at least we know.

The jacket is 1 year old, seen one week of skiing and a handful of wet days in the UK. Do I:

Wash with Tech Wash, leave to drip dry
Wash with Tech Wash, leave to drip dry and iron with a cool iron
Wash with Tech Wash, leave to drip dry, then wash with TX-Wash In
Wash with Tech Wash, leave to drip dry then apply a spray proofer and leave to dry
Wash with Tech Wash, leave to drip dry then apply a spray proofer and leave to dry and then iron with cool iron to re-activate the DWR?

Is TX-Wash In a proofer?
Will TX-Wash In effect breathability?
Because the jacket is fairly new and this is the first wash shouldn't I be able to Tech Wash and then revive the DWR with heat?

Very confusing and every site is different.

PowderHunter, if it is a shell, and there is no wicking liner, wash with techwash, then wash with TX direct, there is no need to dry in between. According to website TX wash in restores breathability. If it is the first wash, then wash with techwash, dry, and then you should be able to restore the proofing with heat such as a cool iron or tumble dryer, although I've found it is fine after just drying naturally.

Run your washing machine on empty first, to get rid of the residues of laundry liquids and conditioners.

IMT, Well yes it does need doing because it's dirty and therefore not beading. Oils from your hands can make it dirty and take on water. Surely if the water doesn't bead off and covers the outside this will affect breathability. If I can do it (and I've just been out to buy some techwash and TX wash) then why shouldn't I?

Thanks to all of you for your help, I now understand this better.

When reviving the DWR with an iron, I assume that you set it to a low temp, (the lowest?) turn the steam off and iron it with a cloth over it? Do you iron it on the inside? Would it be better to use a hairdryer?

 You know it makes sense.

Agree with Helen on this, have treated my Goretex Berghaus walking jacket like this for 12 years and it is just as waterproof as the day I bought it.
If, as you say, you cannot regulate/use your tumble dryer, allow plenty of time to dry naturally. Don't forget to close all zips, velcro etc..........

Lou, my Marmot one gets the same treatment, had it for 6 years and it's fine. I've never bothered ironing or tumbling, just drip dried it on the clothes airer in the bathroom.

I generally use the Toko ones - special washing liquid for outdoor clothing then spray with the waterproofer when the jacket comes out of the machine and then leave to drip dry. I find the Toko ones work really well. Have also tried the Granger waterproofer which requires heat (tumble drying) to activate it, but it's much more expensive and doesn't go as far either.

On a similar subject if I wash the childrens ski gloves with the Nik Wax Tech Wash does it follow that I won't necessarily need to spray them with the waterproofing spray - at least the first time I wash them?

Megamum, don't know really, I have got in the habit of always re-proofing at each wash. I find the wash-in TX direct easier than the spray on, and it is perhaps more evenly applied (well compared to me spraying anyway!)
