Are there any no-contract internet service providers in France that provide dial-up access? I don't need email or newsgroups, just a basic wires-only service that I can pay for via my phone bill. Does Freeserve operate in France?

You can get it from Wanadoo /France Telecom. It's what I've been doing, links all over their web site.
I'm trying to upgrade to DSL though, dirt cheap in France and I can listen to BBC over it. Also I can work over VPN which is handy.

the wanadoo dial up access bills to a French telephone account - I don't think there's a way of using a UK account to get dial up access in France, and though Wanadoo are an ISP in both UK and France, you need two separate accounts. It's a pain. However, if you do have a French phone wanadoo is good because you can switch between levels of subscription, and even suspend it when you are away (not with Broadband though). We found radio reception on the ordinary service was a bit patchy, but it worked most of the time.

I'd like to get DSL for the apartment but that depends on price and when the service is available in Arc 1800. I've looked on the Wanadoo website and from what I can make out (my French is almost non-existant) a 512k service is 19,90 a month. Does this seem right?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

pam w, I'm guessing rob does have a phone, otherwise he'd not want dialup access

You'll need to Register first of course.

pam w, I will have a French phone account, so that should work. It would be nice if there was a DSL service that you could pay for on a monthly basis.

rob@rar.org.uk, that's about right, there are some a bit cheaper. Last time I checked a number in 1800 it came up as being ok for adsl access, as did 1600 - but not 1950 or 2000....

rob@rar.org.uk, try out the Tele2 site, 19.90 should get you faster than 512k. However, they seem to have a little trick of having the same price for the fasted service in the area regardless of whether that happens to be 512k or 2mb I'll bill mine back to work so I don't really care but Tele2 looks cheaper.

Thanks for all the advice and links. When we're ready to set up an account (either dial-up or adsl) I may be back with more questions... At the moment we're busy making final arrangements to take possesion of our apartment this Friday, so an internet service will have to wait until we've got the phone line activated.
