Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My big concern for Austria would be availabilty of veggie food ... would we have to eat omelettes every night in the Schneider?!

simonx, All hotels have such large salad buffets with their evening meals, you could survive on these alone, but our hotel had a main course veggie option every evening, just ask before you book.

simonx, I'm pretty certain the Schneider had a good veggie option. You can always email them - the staff were very helpful and had very good English

Hamish, There are 4 or 5 hotels that really are 4 star, and their prices are the highest accordingly, the Schneider is one of them! January and late March onwards are considerably cheaper than peak period. That's why we are considering going earlier than we usually do, and perhaps trying a more expensive hotel... having said that, we have not had bad food anywhere, and we don't use any spa/pool facilities, so don't need them, but it would be nice to have a lounge to sit in at night, not just a smokey bar. Sad

simonx, The Schneider had at least one veggie main course on the menu every night and there was a line on the menu suggesting you ask about vegetarian option so I would guess you'd be ok. As Sharon says - just ask them, they were very helpful.

sharon1953, yes there are cheaper hotels - I stayed in the Wisenegg last year for a lot less (and was very happy with it).
This year it was a family trip and my wife and daughter wanted the convenience of being close to the lifts and wanting a swimming pool so they'd have alternatives to skiing (seeing as there's not really a great deal to do in the town).
In fact for the price of the hotel wasn't much more than any of the others (included ski pass and free child option made a bit of difference).

Hamish, Yes I should imagine any discount for kids makes a difference, and alternative activities are useful, for us, it would have to "impossible" to ski before we'd think of staying in Madeye-Smiley ...but then we don't have youngsters to consider!! When a hotel quotes inclusive of lift pass, it is the same priced lift pass as buying it yourself. I calculated the room prices with and without passes to see if you got any discounts, but you don’t, this applies to all hotels. All they do is go to the lift office and buy it for you. In mid Feb, we paid 89 euro per person per night, but when that jumps to 100+ x 7 x 2, it soon adds up. In April, we only paid 58 euro.pppn, but our February Hotel still wanted 67 euro. Needless to say we chose the cheaper one and it was just as nice. In fact the food was actually better.

sharon1953, to be honest I didn't consider whether the ski pass was discounted or not, but taking the total price for the weekly package and comparing it to cost per room per day + ski pass, it worked out better for us. In this case the hotel discounted the price of the room for the week, maybe not the ski pass.
The hotels can in fact give a discount ion the pass if they wish...

my German's not up to much but you can get 10% (ish ?) discount from them.

Anyway - we all had a good time and each feel we got erasonable value for money. Wish I was still there - I see it's been snowing again Smile !

Hamish, So do we, next year seems so far off. We noticed that lots of the hotels reduce their room prices if you stay longer than 7 days.
Looks like they do discount the lift tickets, but at very specific times. Using babel fish translation it reads:

Expenditure only in connection with one Hotel reservation. Intermediate and off-season arrangements

from 24.11. to 23.12.2007

from 12.01. to 03.02.2008

from 29.03. to 01.05.2008

Did you book direct or go with a tour op?

Wahey, posting from a sunny Obertauern, with great snow, empty pistes and no lift queues at all. And one supermarket remains open at least for this week Razz
There are plenty of people around the place and most mountain huts are still open so the place is by no means a ghost town with tumbleweed rolling down the empty pistes.

sharon1953, We booked direct. I think the TOs stopped going to Obertauern from end of March and we needed to go 2nd week of April, butI'm not sure.
Never thought of looking for longer than 7 days - we were constrained to 1 week this year, but my wife actually commented that this year she would have liked to stay longer (she's a very timid skier, but was starting to really enjoy herself this time!).
Well, this year's skiings over - time to start researching for next year Madeye-Smiley

Hello all,

I have read this thread with interest as I havn't been to Obertauern in 15 years. We are however thinking about going for New Year 2009 and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a 4* hotel suitable for 2 adults and one 12year old. I'm not bothered about apre ski as we just usually use the hotel bar etc, but I want my son to feel OK as some 4-5* can be a bit stuffy. Cost is also relevant as we go to Ellmau each year at Feb half term and this costs (all in) between £1500 and £1900 depending on exchange rate.

I have looked on trip advisor and was looking at hotel Steiner, can anyone confirm if this is ski in/out as I hate carrying skis and walking.

I also noted that you advise transfer from Salzburg, but I cannot find any direct flights for under £900 for the three of us and am considering Munich as they are as cheap as chips. Flightmpping shows ryanair and other no frills airlines (thomsonfly), but I cannot find anything for Salzburg - I am too early for booking these flights.

Many thanks

We had 2 veggies in our family at the Schneider last year and they had really good food. The evening meals were 7? courses and 2 (or 3) of those were buffet style. The food there could not be faulted, probably the best I have ever had in terms of quality and quantity.

*ermintrude*, Bit early for flights yet - some don't show that they even go to Salzburg, but that's because they don't at this time of year. Our flights didn't appear until July. As for hotels, use Tourist Office website, all the hotel websites are on there. I don't think any of the 4 * hotels are stuffy, not that kind of resort!

Sort of.... you can ski across a road bridge to catch the Zehnerkar, Grunwaldkopf, Sonnen 1 and Kirchbuhel lifts. Skiing back is slightly trickier - you should be able to catch the Gamseliten 2 or Zehnerkar lifts and then wind your way down, across the Kirchbuhel nursery slope and then cross the road bridge back to the hotel. I don't think you can acces the north east slopes from the back of the hotel.

Hello,

Does anyone know if you can ski directly to and from the door of the Hotel Zehnerkar without having to walk? Puzzled

danielaclark, You can probably ski out from the back to catch the Zehnerkar, Grunwaldkopf, Sonnen 1 and Kirchbuhel lifts. Another option would be a 2 or 3 minute walk to the Gamsleiten 2 lift. Skiing back would involve catching the Gamseliten 2 or Zehnerkar lifts and then winding your way down to the back of the hotel. It's pretty central for most of the shops and bars too.
