I have a rucksack with both waist and chest straps in addition to the more common shoulder straps. For sake of clarity let's call the shoulder straps '1', the chest '2' and the wasit '3'. My current method is; tug 1, attach 2 and 3, tighten 3 to resistance, 2 to firm but not compressed, further tug on 1 to stabilise, perhaps re-adjust 2 if last tug on 1 has altered fit, finish with 3, losen 1 slightly.
Is this the correct method? Any suggestions?

lol If I didn;t know you weren't serious....
but a lot of people don't knwo how to wear a rucksack properly. for those who don;t, the weight should be supported by your hips, so start with the waist belt. once that's right, use the shoulder straps to keep the bag against your back, then finally the chest strap to make sure the should straps are comfortable

Firstly, your naming is all wrong - you have 2 shoulder straps. So, let's call them 1 and 2, your chest 4 and your waist 3.
Clip 3 up first and give it a good tug.
Then pull on 1 & 2 one at a time. (or one and two at a time, depending on how you look at it). Now, remember, this is actually number 1 in your old way of thinking.
Now pull on 3 again. Watch you don't pull it too tight.
Check 1 and 2.
Now give 4 a good yank (that's your old 2, not to be confused with 2 that is part of your old 1)
If you can't breathe, then 4 may be a tad tight.
Now give 3 a final tug.
And lastly, tug on 1 and 2 (or just one in your way of counting)
Finally, put the rucksack on your back.
Simple.

skimottaret, I disagree, the title of this section is "Equipment Reviews/Questions", and this is clearly a question about equipment.

Will this sequence be the same if I wear a backpack rather than a rucksack?

always wear your backpack on your front. Just because you're sliding down a mountain at speed doesn't mean some expert-skiing nimble fingered little rapscallion can't come up and nick your camera from it without you noticing. It's a tip I picked up from some Americans on a Tower of London tour but it works anywhere. Forewarned is forearmed.

Attach nuts to the straps , lie outside and wait for some squirrells to come along. once they have hold of your nuts and start tugging you should be tight in no time.
