Poster: A snowHead
|
We are heading to Verbier for a long weekend in early April during the UK "Easter" school hols (which are actually 2 weeks after Easter this year...)
How bad is it likely to be for lift queues/congestion on the slopes?
Any tips for where we can head to escape the masses and any recommendations for reasonably priced mountain restaurants?
Thanks in advance.

John Crawford, it will be fairly quiet then. Most Euros and nearly all the locals (bar the tourers) consider the ski season to be over after Easter. There will be some Brits but not over run by them. Some of the TOs here are stopping at the end of March for some reason. Lift queues = nil, some people on the slopes.
IMO April is a fantastic time to ski here. You want an early start to ski the corduroy in the morning and then in the afternoon it's lazy slush skiing.
You might be limited to the Verbier / Mont Fort sector as the links across the four valleys get hit hard by the sun later on in the season.
Verbier does three types of lunches. Self-service, typical European prices, certainly not more expensive than France. Sit down lunches, amazing food but very expensive. I love to watch the City boys drinking Chateau Margeux at 2500m, I bet they can really savour it! The third option is picnics! It's April, apart from when it snows (it does and it will) you can have some fantastic pic nics, get your sandwiches from the Michelod Kiosk at Medran, very tasty!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Parlor, thanks very much for the advice.
We are skiing for a few days before heading off on a ski tour. If it's not too much trouble could you please advise names of rental shops in Verbier where we can hire ski touring kit?
I'd like to contact them in advance to get my order in....

John Crawford, Not all UK schools have their Easter holidays after Easter. My son is off the two weeks around Easter, so we are off to Wengen and Zermatt for two weeks from the 15th March. Hopefully this will help as they are not all off at the same time.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

geepee, Easter never seems anything like as busy as half term, even when it is nicely timed for skiing, as it is this year. The staggered holidays will also help. Easter should be a far, far, better bet than half term this year. Have a great holiday.

John Crawford, if by touring kit you mean the full set up for Haut Route or similar then I would suggest Montagne Sports in the cable car station at Le Chable.
They specialize in that sort of kit.

John Crawford, if you are just talking skis and skins then I would suggest Ski Centre, PM me and I can arrange for you to have a 10% discount there. However the only shop that you can hire proper touring gear, ie harness, axes, crampons etc, is Boit a Skis, where I can't get you a discount.
