Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Easter in Austria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Looking at sneaking in an 'extra' trip with the kids this year over the Easter Hols. Trying to get 1st week (March 22-29) if possible, Would really like to try Ischgl as it sounds like a fun place and have done most of the Mega French resorts so fancy a change.

So, Questions:

Is March 22nd a bit late for Ischgl, It seems pretty high and the snow records look OK but no Glacier so wondering whats the snow like there that late?

Accommodation - there are plenty of luxury hotels (Elisabeth, Sonnen, Solaire etc) but all a bit pricy for two adults and 4 late teens. Don't seem to be a lot of chalets or am I just missing something - any recommendation's for a decent place to stay that wont cost over £1000 per head!

Is it driveable from the UK? Have driven to the French alps loads of times, and am off to Wengen in the morning but Austria looks a bit further. If Flying to Ischgl what's the best airport?

Finally, is the place as lively as it's cracked up to be? It sounds like 'party on the slopes' which is what would make it interesting Oh and one last point, what's the skiing like Very Happy we are a bunch of intermediates with two snowboarders so a good mix of reds and blues with a few lighter blacks and a bit of off-piste would be perfect.

Thanks in advance for any info

will be reading the forum while away (probably on the device that cannot be named wink Very Happy )

Whitegold will probably be along in a moment to tell that Ischgl is risky in late March.

As I said in that thread 90% of the ski area is above 2000m. It's one of the most snow sure non glacier resorts in the entire Alps, never mind Austria.

As for accommodation it is mostly hotels. It's not a place you'll find a lot of Brits, so you won't find many chalets there. In fact I'd be shocked if there were any. If you fancy DIY then the tourist board are pretty good.

Innsbruck is easiest for Ischgl. Less than an hour by car. Very easy drive as well. Have also driven from Munich, which is about 2 1/2 - 3hrs away. Think Zurich is a similar distance, not sure about Salzburg. Don't know about driving from the UK.

The apres ski is easily the best I've ever experienced (well Solden was close).

Great resort for boarders. Most lifts are high speed detachables and the lift exits are just about as easy as you'll get anywhere. Since you don't have any complete beginners in your party I'd say the terrain is exactly what you're looking for. The vast majority is blues or reds and absolutely ideal for intermediates. There are a scattering of blacks and it's possible to find some decent off piste.

Just don't tell anybody about it once you get back. Don't want too many people getting to know about it and putting the prices up. Oops. Embarassed snowHead

Silvretta was pretty good when I was there Jan this year.

From what I have seen in Zillertal, Silvretta and also Solden/Obergurgl valleys Austria in enjoying good snow this season and I would be stunned if Ischgl could be lack of snow in March this year. If one wants safety Obergurgl starting at 1930m had the best snow. I checked it out Solden and Obergurgl (but did nit not ski it) when I moved from Zillertal to Silvretta.

Ischgl is about 630 miles from Amsterdam.

The above thread does suggest Ischgl is dominated by 4 and 5 star hotels and the place is an upmarket and exclusive skiing resort like St Anton. The Austrian Bergfex site, which I found to be very accurate, consistently rated Ischgl above St Anton in their top 10.

We avoided the expensive accommodation by staying in Valzur which is 5 km away from Ischgl. Mathon (nearer) and Kappl also have affordable accomodations and accessible by ski buses. We drove ourselves as we like to try the whole of Silvretta Valley. We paid 25 Euro/head/night for B&B in Valzur and drove to have dinner at Ischgl each night. To us accommodation is only marginally more expensive than other Austrian resorts as we paid only 22 Euro/head/night B&B in middle of Mayrhofen at the mid point between Ahorn and Penken gondola stations. We had in the past paid 30 Euro for B&B staying in the town like Zell am See. We couldn't detect food in Ischgl was more expensive than others (including Italians and French resorts) even when we ate at some of the restaurants of the expensive hotels but there are many places in Ischgl where one can blow money.

From the map the airport closest appears to be Innsbruck.

If one goes there with a car do not forget Ischgl is only 35 to 40 miles from St Anton/Zurs/Lech and Serfaus/Fiss/Ladis. Either resort is well worth a visit if you bother do a day trip.

There shouldn't be any problem with Ischgl at Easter. Its high for Austria with most of the skiing above 2000m. Unfortunately most hotels are of a 4* status and aren't cheap. However, there is a lot of good B&B accommodation (I stay in the hotel Neder next to the petrol station) and there are plenty of restaurants. The lift system is excellent and its a large area with the added bonus of being able to ski into Switzerland to have lunch in Samnaum - pick up some duty frees while you're there. Its made for intermediates. Some good blues, the blacks are manageable but primarily red runs.

I ski twice a year - always go on the first Friday in March and always to Ischgl (two weeks, two days, eight hours and sixteen minutes to go) and then at Easter (Zell Am See this year). If I could only ski once it would always be in Ischgl.

We used to drive there and it took about eleven hours - its just under seven hundred miles from Calais. As for flying the nearest airport is Innsbruck, about an hours drive. Zurich and Salzburg are about three hours away.

As for the Apres Ski its insane. I 've been to St Anton which was quiet in comparison. The only place I've been to that comes anywhere near is Solden but even thats somewhere behind. If you like Apres Ski try the Trofana Alm (a seething mass of humanity) Nikis Stadl or, my favourite, the Kitzloch.

If you go have a great time.

AxsMan, think I posted on a similar thread that Ischgl was great last year during the first week of April, considering the conditions that prevailed in some of Europe last season. You'll have no probs snowHead

Thanks folks, Couldn't get the first week (of Easter) but am booked in for the week beginning March 29th. Hoping conditions are good, but from what i hear, the snow is secondary to the beer anyway Very Happy (Can't think why I haven't been before Puzzled Laughing )

Ischgl is a great resort, stayed there several times, its really extensive and loads of opportunities for quieter runs if you do some travelling away from the central area (Gampenalp). If you have a car there are lots of relatively cheap rooms to rent further down the Paznaun Valley, also some nice apartments. Only benefit of staying in Ischgl itself is to make the most of the apres and because if you stay in town you get a lift pass discount. If you have a car do make some time to ski at Kappl and also See, both of which are fantastic small ski areas, particularly Kappl on a sunny day! You can sit at your desk and check out the snow all day on the best live video stream from a mountain I've yet found anywhere, check out http://multimedia.telekom.at/portal/player.asp?id=2418

Am thinking of going to Ischgl 1st week of May - K2 is running a women's event there, so they must be expecting snow! As well as Innsbruck, you could fly to Friedrichshafen - it would mean using TryingAir, and it's a longer transfer, but it is apparently doable.
