No single "best". It depends on what you're looking for.

Mosha Marc, witches tit is a good run but rarely open. Glenshee is probably the all round best.

priceyboy, in the order of your criteria then and matching against each one; St Anton, Morzine, Alta/Solitude/UT generally maybe Wyoming at a pinch, Chamonix

agreed ... and there was no better place than Schweitzer, ID on Sunday with a foot of fresh, more in trees, sunshine, cold and no one on the hill because it was superbowl sunday. Perfection for a day!
and David Murdoch it's Alta/Snowbird

I haven't been to every ski resort in the world, so I am unable to say which is the best, but Jerry has it spot on.

gortonator, no it's not. I couldn't make up my mind between Alta/Snowbird and Solitude so I included both

The best skiing resort in the world has to be in a country, right?
Can we identify this country first?
May be after that we have best for snow, best for hotel, best for lessons, best for chairlifts, best for food, best for transfer, best for safety, best for off piste, best for value, best for bragging ..................etc , etc

So far the best for me with around everything has got to be St Anton!

HoundDog, Verbier or St Anton, can't decide

Has to be Val D'Isere, doesn't it? L'Espace Killey is just amazing. Oddly, I feel no urge to go back. Looking forward to Wengen and St Anton this year. Hmm. There's La Grave of course - ski the whole mountain and no grooming. Then there's LDA - good prices, friendly people, good skiing. Oh I can't decide.

It's a very interesting question isn't it.
Having thought about it... I have "only" been to a dozen resorts of the ?tens of thousands worldwide, so how I could I possibly judge.
(BTW, the real answer is: Wherever I am going next )

Joanne Mountainsun, totally agree!
Even breaking it down to things like "best for chairlifts" - you need to go further - do you mean "fewest queues", "shortest queues", "most uplift capacity", "most lift", "most vertical per chair", "fastest chairs", "most comfortable", "least likely to smack you in the calf/knee"...
For me the best chairlift is one where I can ski straight on to it - no queuing, and it whisks me quickly and comfortably to the top of where I want to ski from, and not have 3 other lifts dumping people in the same spot.
Best for transfer that I've flown into so far is definitely Aspen. A good selection of scheduled flights available, and within 30 minutes of landing you can be in your hotel room slopeside in Snowmass. Probably about 5 minutes from the airport to Buttermilk if you want to ski/board there.

You go to Chamonis, Verbier, Val D St A...etc etc etc .... and you'll share the mountains with zillions of people.... if that is what you want..you are more than welcome to it...

Wear The Fox Hat This obviously needs further investigation. Without wanting to put anybody out of their normal life situation, I'd gladly be more than willing to do this task.
Just need a willing sponsor to the tune of about £1M now..... any offers?

a country has to be france i reckon.
from there - either chamonix, the "portes du soleil" (i think that counts? takes into account biggies like morzine/les gets/avoriaz but also smaller resorts like st jean and chatel)
PDS covers everything - good weather, altitude (avoriaz) good night life (morzine) good family environment and baby slopes(les gets) close to airport (50 mins) good range of accommodation - hotels, hostels, chalets, apartments...i think one part of the PDS on it's own prob couldn't stand up alone but together they are stronger.
correct me if i am wrong! (which i am sure you will!)
