Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving from Chambery airport to Serre Chevalier. Which way?

Travelling from Chambery airport to Serre Chevalier at the end of Feb.

Suggested route is to drive east, down the A70, pass briefly through Italy then onto Briancon and Chantemerle.

Alternative is to go south on the A41 through Grenoble, then over the Col de Lauteret.

Any comments / experience of these two routes (or indeed, a better alternative)?

shockingmoment, either. No alternatives. Frejus is more expensive though (tunnel toll is 32 euros).Suggest you are guided by the weather forecast. If it is snowing hard, take the Frejus tunnel via Italy, In good weather, the Col du Lauteret . We;ve used both, not a lot of difference in time.

I strongly suspect that the A70 route will be closed in winter - but then again looking at a map, maybe not. It would take you through the Maurienne valley and through the Fréjus tunnel, the you;d cut down from Oulx to Cesana Torinese and onwards.

I've done the trip from Grenoble to Briancon in a tour-op coach and it was horrible. The A70 route as far as Oulx will be good driving as it's motorway all the way - not sure after that though

nbt, not so bad in a hire car though, and the scenery is stunning. A70 is seriously boring and dull.

Thanks for the info.

I'll check the weather and decide from there. If its open, I think I'd prefer to go up and over - travelling midday so should be quite pleasant.

Had traveled both routes and pretty neutral myself, possibly like Helen's view.

I found the N91 via the Col du Lautaret rather tiring because of its length. Mind you in summer it can be an ideal motorbike country. The only advantage of it is that you know you are passing L'Alpe D'Heuz, LDA and La Grave on the way. Whenever I am on that road I always admire the British skiers keeping properties at the end of the valley. It take guts and determination to travel that barren road to get to the far end. May be I have been spoiled by the years travelling on one-hour drive from Geneva to Chamonix, with only 17 miles, mostly dual, non-motorway.
