Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Good morning

Having already had a week in ADH in January with the kids I thought the season was over Sad

We had considered trying Feb half term week but thought toooooooooooooo busy for the amount of dosh the companies wanted.

Then last week my better half was trawling the internet and spotted Flaine from Edinburgh on 16 th Feb for, wait for it .......................................................................£706. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Now we've had to pay for parking and a hotel at the airport but what a price for a family of 4 Toofy Grin during half term even if it is only 2* s/c.

I just need to pay for the added extras lol

God bless lastminute.com and Inghams !!!!!

Now does anyone have any advice on good places to eat , were staying in Flaine Foret and any other usefull info.

cheers[/b]

Hi Curtains,

Flaine's great - was there easter 07 and going back this easter, 08.

I posted a bit of info in this thread: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=799698&highlight=flaine#799698

Have a great time - the place is bloody ugly IMHO but the ski-ing is ace.

We got back a week ago from Flaine thanks to a lastminute.com/Inghams holiday!!

Do you know which apartment you'll be in? We were in Arche in Floret and it was spot on, had stunnng views.

The only thing I will say is the Inghams rep is well...a nightmare. If he can take ten minutes to explain something that will take ten seconds, then he does. He likes to feel in control I think. He makes some things so totally over complicated. Our departure arrangements last week were a joke as he wanted us to walk from one end of Flaine to the other with all our luggage, despite the bus passing our street, so we told him where we wanted picked up, he didn't like that. He also likes to claim that his wages are affected if he doesn't get your questionnaire back. We told him we were sending ours in as it tells you on it that you can do that.

Anyway, as for food, we stayed in most of the time to be honest. We went to the creperie down in Forum which is next to the ice skating rink and that was pretty yummy (went twice!). There is a good pizza takeaway in the shopping centre in Floret. There is also a fab patisserie in the shopping centre too! The supermarket in Floret is pretty well stocked. The one is Form is bigger and has different things, but again is pretty good.

One excursion you can do is to go snowshoeing one night. The night includes a meal at one of the chalets on the ski runs. It is superb, do it! Think it cost about 31€. For that price, you get your snowshoe hire and are bussed up to the top of Flaine where you are led around the woods, up hills and down hills for just short of a couple of hours. You are taken to spots giving stunning views of the valleys below and Flaine itself. We had a clear night for this it was truly excellent. Once we got back to the chalet, we were given a salad, wine, a cheese fondue with meat and then a pudding. The fondue was the best I have ever had.

There is a cinema in Flaine and most nights they played films in English which was pretty good. They were all recent films too. We were going to go one night but never made it yet!

I'm sure you will have a top time!

Enjoy!!

snowaddict, Tell me more about the snowshoeing evening, sounds great........we are going back beginning of April and would love to do this Smile

Curtains, We find supermarket is well stocked but pricey. I would recommend that you bring some bits with you but I guess if you are with Inghams that you will be on organised transport?
One restaurant that we love is Chez Pierrot in Forum arcade (Tel 0450908456). It's a pizzeria with lovely local menu and atmosphere, do book!
Have been recommended Perdrix Noire pub (English run) in Foret, though we found it over priced with a limited menu Sad

Would second the thoughts on Perdrix Noire - limited menu so didn't bother.

Lou, the snow shoeing is great!! It isn't an Inghams thing, it is run by ESF I think. You'll spot leaflets of it around and about. You can book it up at Le Bissac which is the slope side eatery beside the three poma lifts around the nursery slope, the place above the Grand Vans chair.

It was just really good fun! I had never done it before. Two instructors led the group and we did a mix of being on trails and going off trails through loads of fresh new snow. We went up hills and down hills and all of just let you know how great snow shoes are for getting around. Being in the dark with our little head torches and having a wonderfully clear night just made it all the more special. Our main instructor was great at giving some facts about Flaine and the valley which made it really interesting.

Once we were in the chalet, the hospitality was superb. Claudine seems to be the boss and her fondue was to die for. She loved you asking questions so she could tell you more about her fondue recipe. It really was something else! I could just fancy one for my dinner tonight!!!

I'd recommend the restaurant next to the tourist info office, it's 3 or 4 years since we were there but is' possibily the best meal we've had in france outside of val d'isere -pizza and sald for me, pierre chaude for Mrs NBT, lovely food Smile

Just found a leaflet about croq' raquettes i.e. snow shoeing. I didn't think the ESF was right. It is the Ski Ecole International that do it.

snowaddict, The Dutchman is a bit more of a drinking den at night - there are even some dutch people usually. It does lunches though which are handy if you're back in Foret. The other side of the Residence de La Foret (left side as you look at it) there's a place that specialises in stuffed pita breads - you can specifiy your own combination of fillings which is great for kids. ITs quite small and worth booking if you fancy it - its almost directly ahead of you when you come out of the Forum - Foret bin lift ("ascensuer"?) that is nearest the nursery slopes. Does great tartes too.

EnjoyCurtains, I'm in the Grand Massif this Thursday snowHead snowHead snowHead

As much as it pains me to share my knowledge, snowHead has been very helpful of late so here goes..

I heartily reccommend the resaurant at lac de Gers. Bottom of the black styx run / blue cascades run. can only be reached on skis and if you use teh blue there is a telephone that you can ring for a royal marines style 'ski-tow' off the back of a skidoo. If you use the black then my top reccommendation is 'TUCK!' from as early as you dare! - the restaurant is at the other end of the lake (not as shown on the piste map). You need to book and allow yourself time for a leisurely lunch, but we thought it was well worth it. And we got to watch the mountain avalache into the lake. amazing.

There. If I cant book a table next time I'm there due to snowHead I'll be very upset!! Laughing snowHead wink

My other tip is watch out for the button lift by the race piste at the bottom of the resort - packs quite a kick!

pielot, you are right about that lift! I only weigh 9 stone and I was hanging on for dear life the first time I used it. It was a bit of a surprise. I live in Scotland and are therefore used to poma lifts, but this one was quite a brute!!

pielot, that lift still kicks?
We were Flaine regulars from about 1992 to 2002....I'd have thought they would have fixed it by now!

It was still doing it when we were there in April 07.

If I can be bothered to fire up the piste map I'll whack up some favourite runs and rack my brains for the other restaurant we liked...igloo I think it was called.

Just back from GM -here's my thoughts on the runs (4th time so getting used to it)

Blues - Crystal and Serpentine are fabbo - the contours on Serpentine are outrageous but keep half an eye out for people jumpimg the bumps - don't stop in a blind spot! Better am than pm and best at lunchtime when no ski schools

The bottom of the run under Grand Van is still a bit of a pain inspite of splitting it into three parts (on is a red) Prior to the split there is a bottleneck that is a tad steep and mogulled and can be congested. I don't know why they don't adapt the 8 man lift to bring down beginners people who have had a day out to the other GM resorts.

Reds - The middle part of Mephisto is an easy red - snow conditions at the weekend were perfect. Faust is the steepest red into Forum and can be icy. The others are OK

Fred ,and the top part of Mephisto - not always open but best in the pm when softened (but great in the early morning when empty!

Faust - from top to bottom was also terrific last weekend.

Lucifer was unpisted (a sign warned you at the top) and had some big bumps.

Don't do the blacks so no comment but warning about off piste. Very big holes!

Enjoy... snowHead snowHead snowHead
