Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mounting bindings on a zz-lab plate - glue/grease

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi

Bit of a specialist question, but I have a pair of 06 Salomon S-Lab 3v skis and a 914 lab binding to mount on them. The plate is the black split plate with pre-drilled (but not threaded) holes. I need to mount them up, and have a simple question: with pre-drilled plastic plates like these, do I need to glue the screws and/or grease the contact points between binding and plate? I've checked the Salomon shop manuals but they only give instructions on the binding/hole placings and don't mention whether to glue or not.

Any advice?

Thanks

Sideshow_Bob, welcome to snowHeads.

I've mounted a few pairs of LAB's recently for BASI guys who get 'em cheap. Glue isn't required as water can't get into the plastic/metal plate like it can on a wood core skis & the screws don't need lubication during insertion etc.

I do degrease the holes & put a bit of blue loctite on the screws just to hold 'em secure as I've previously seen some screws work loose. Don't overtighten the screws so don't use a powerdriver. If you have a torque screwdriver set it to 4.5Nm. If not insert screws until they just stop & then give them another eighth of a turn only. It's easy to give them another qtr/half turn but that'd be too much.

Thanks for the prompt reply! It's a shame the plates on the SL skis don't have the brass pre-threaded inserts as on the GS skis.

I originally thought about taking them in to Snow and Rock, but they charge £25 a pop which for simply screwing in some screws seems rather excessive, and I'll probably get someone with no experience of the plates or the bindings drilling holes left, right and center. I still have nightmares about giving my skis to someone I don't know/trust. The first set of 3v race stock skis I had back in 99 with the red metal/rubber plates were messed up by the muppets at the shop who drilled them badly resulting in the plate de-laminating. They had to take off and bin the plate and put on a black plastic poweraxe plate instead, ccompletely ruining the flex of the ski.
