I have some Elan Magfires, the binding was set for me when I bought it. With the recent thread about about an Elan binding breaking I decided to have a little look at my own bindings. I have been reading the manual which explains how they work and the only thing I am not clear on is the forward pressure indicator. It says the Indicator must be within the scribed area, I can see the scribed area but I'm not sure which bit is in indicator. I plan to get these bindings checked but would like to know how they should look when they are set up correctly.

lynseyf, I'm looking at your photo and can't see where it matches my binding, otherwise I'd post a photo of the same area to show you what mine (which have been done by a shop) look like. These are my bindings, are they the same as yours?

Yes they are the same as mine. If you look underneath where you set the DIN for the heel piece you should see a bity like the picture I posted.

Thats what I thought but I don't see how you can get the bit of metal with the scribed bit on it to move independently of the plastic housing. The instructions I have for the binding say if the forward pressure is wrong to readjust the boot sole length but doing so moves both the plastic housing ( B in my pic) and the bit of scribed metal together.
Unless you mean the outer bit of plastic housing (A in pic)

lynseyf, The plastic bit moves back when the boot is locked into the binding, so that the back edge of the housing (marked by the top point of your letter 'A') lines up with the appropriate scribe marks on the flat metal part. It wont move unless the boot is in the binding.

Yeah I have been looking at it with the boot in the binding but what I don't understand is how you adjust it if its not within the scribed area as the metal scribed bit and the plastic housing only seem to move together when I adjust the bootsole length which is what the Elan brochure says to do if the indicator isn't within the scribed area. I don't see you you change the position of one without the other one moving as well.

Adjust with boot OUT of binding
Click boot IN.
Check indicator.

You move both together until clicking the boot in adequately separates one from the other.

I think I now know why I opt for lobbing them at the local shop and trusting that they know what they're on about! However, at least lynseyf, will now be able to check things are as they should be for herself which I'll never be able to do.

It wasn't so obvious until we removed the heel piece and saw how it actually worked, also putting the sole length larger than my boot meant that the plastic bit didn't move into the scribed metal bit which made it easier to understand as well
