red 27, I am currently looking at a 4 night stay in St Anton at the beginning of Feb for my group....absolutely nothing available !! Unfortunately our dates aren't flexible. But if yours are I can give you the name of a couple of places.
I spoke to a travel agent yesterday (Simon at Alpine Answers - very knowledgable) and he mentioned that if we book with only a few days to go before we fly out, then there should be places as the hotels and pensions let go of roome that they have not filled for the standard Sat-Sat weekly turn around.
I asked about Lech and Zurs area and he said much the same for them as well.
Good luck!!

Gilbern74, thanks - my dates are flexy at this stage so I'd love those names please. I'll also check out Alpine Answers - they're an agent I'm guessing - take their cut from the Hotelier?

Most of the 5 Star Hotels will take short bookings.
If you offer to book & pay for a B & B for a whole week you may have more success.
If your 4 days spans a weekend then you will unlikely find anywhere until the last minute.
Weekend bookings effectively block the Hotel from the possibility of a 2 week booking.

Hotel Alpenrose accommodated a group of 7 for 2 nights, but that was on the 2nd weekend of the season in early December, worth a shot though ... good location, 2 mins walk from lift.
Your best bet is to use the resort websites in the week leading up to your trip. You'll have a very good chance of success if you only need one room.

red 27, yes, AA are an agent - I have no affiliation with them!! they just sounded very helpful to me...

Changeover day in St A is generally Sunday, or so I'm told. I booked an apartment through the Snowco for this Sat to Wed, was actually from Interhome. But it was basically a full week booking, albeit at a price we thought was ok, about £42 ppn, for a 4 bedroom apartment.
What about this? http://www.stantonchalets.co.uk/short_break_details.asp?cid=16

Not convinced that's the case, I've been told that it's usually Saturday, so I put the theory to the test.
Using the St Anton online search tool, more rooms are available for Sat>Sat bookings than there are for Sun>Sun bookings.
i.e. when searching for 2 rooms, each for 2 people for 7 nights:
Sat 2/2/08 - 10 hits
Sun 3/2/08 - 5 hits
Sat 1/3/08 - 13 hits
Sun 2/3/08 - 8 hits
Sat 29/3/08 - 26 hits
Sun 30/3/08 - 24 hits
OK, not scientific, but it whiled away a few minutes. results suggest that if you're going for a week then you have a good choice, be it Sat or Sun.

Gilbern74, we had a similar problem finding somewhere for a group of 9. Ended up booking one place for the first 2 nights and somewhere else for the 2nd 2 nights, not the greatest hardship, so if u can't find one place for the entire duration of you stay, try breaking it down a bit ...

From all the corespondence I've had I'd say St A is generally changeover Sat-Sat, but it's not set in stone and each hotel/guest house have their own preferences.
masmith, yes, we've had a couple of offers 6/Feb to 9/Feb, leaving us to find a place for the last night.
If there's a casino I know most of my group would rather spend the night in there, so problem solved!

The English tour companies changeover on Sundays, they have there own chalets so It does not matter what day they change over. The English & Scandinavian Tour companies have block bookings with the major Hotels all winter.
Only when the Hotels know there are no customers coming from the Tour companies for a particular week do they let the rooms go i.e They make double money, who can blame them !!
All other people change over on Saturdays.
Saturday is the best day of the week to ski due to the lack of people
As said before on a number of occasions on this Forum. St Anton , Lech, Ischgl market themselves as Holiday destinations not weekend destinations. The weekenders who do come (Germans & Swiss) have there cars & stay out of town down valley or go home.
The first Week of February this year is Fasching. It will be packed (everywhere in Austria)
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karneval%2C_Fastnacht_oder_Fasching
Fasching / Shrove Tuesday: 5 Feb. 2008
Aschermittwoch / Ash Wednesday: 6 Feb. 2008 (Quiet day no music or dancing)
Having said all that, I have turned up without accommodation many times, gone to the tourist office and allways found somewhere to stay even if down in Gand. There are late cancellations/no shows all the time.

Have aranged a group for the second year to st anton.... I deal directly with pensions (last year) and apartments (this year) and apartments are dearer. You can expect to pay on average €50 to €60 for family run accomodation and your pass covers you on the ski-bus, all taxis are 8 seaters and average €10 to €15 to get to most hotels in the village(s)
I use the www.stantonamarlberg.com as you can go through each offering, see when they're available and use the map to figure out how far from the lift you are.
However they all prefer saturday to saturday bookings, but if your nice they might give you sunday bookings and unless they're quiet, or its last minute you have to book a full week, even if you stay a half week and really dont like friday to monday bookings

As always the in-resort accommodations can be selective on requests demanding less than a full week stay whereas off-resort accommodations are a lot easier.
Just came back from Ischgl after staying 6 nights in Valzur which is about 5km from Ischgl. Valzur and Mathon (mid way between Ischgl and Valzur) appear to have plenty accommodations available. We paid only 25 Euro B&B per head in a twin room with en-suite and were their only guests in the pension we stayed. We had a car and so were able to ski every resort in Silvretta plus a trip (38 miles) to Serfaus/Fiss/Ladis which is in a different valley from Silvretta.
We stayed in St Jacob while skiing St Anton/Zurs/Lech.
If a group of skiers going only for a few days then a hired car is a good way to overcome the accommodation and transfer problems. Just pick any resort you fancy, draw a circle with a 10 miles radius and select any accommodation inside at the price you prepare to pay. Off-resort accommodation cost is around 1/2 or 1/3 cheaper than those in the resort. This strategy is particularly effective when you pick an upmarket resorts and avoid getting whacked by its high in-resort prices but able to enjoy the same resort facilities.

saikee, very interesting post.... slightly more hassle factor, and relies on one of the party being sober enough to drive, but as you say an good strategy in low-ish lying Austria.
