Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Haute Route....

Have been offered the chance to join an organised tour to complete Le Haute Route - anyone done it? Whilst I would love to do it, I suspect the required fitness levels may mean it is wiser for me to sit it out until next year...what do you think?

Day I suggest that if you have to ask..

I've no idea, I dont' have either the fitness or the talent required. The only person I'm aware off that has done this thinks nothing of knocking out 90 minute runs, 3 hour bike rides and then windsurfs from Worthing to Pagham and back again in strong / tricky conditions just to 'catchup with the guys'

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Guvnor, It's hard. Have you toured before ?

Yep. I've done it. Chamonix to Zermatt
It was fun and challenging. Took about 7 days. Staying overnight in the huts. Most of them were great. A couple were a bit basic.
Weathered in for a day at one of the huts... ...beware of your guide! Ours was a master at cheating at scrabble...

Have you done any touring before, staying in huts overnight?
If not, then it may be a bit of a shock to the system.

Fitness - I put a lot of effort into training beforehand, so the physical side of things was OK.
On a three hour uphill skin, mental resilience becomes very important.

We did haute route with only a couple of day tours of experience each.
In retrospect, we would have been wiser to have done a couple of long weekends, so that we knew what to expect.
Its not for everyone. You don't want to commit to a week, and then find you hate it.

ski, Yeah, have done plenty of touring, but never more than 2 days, so never quite the distance or time of the Haute Route.....

I have already said that I am doubtful and that they shouldn't count on me being there....if for no other reason, that I am not skiing as much this year so won't have thighs of steel wink

Guvnor, The skiing isn't hard. You do have a couple of long days - if going via the Grand Combin, the skin up to the Valsorey hut is a bit of a slog. snowHead It's a very popular (therefore crowded) route snowHead

I'll see how I get on this weekend - gonna up the ante in the gym, and may take a lengthy ride on the old bike....haven't got to commit yet, so have a month or so to see if I am going to be in any sort of shape to consider it....

Guvnor, I have done the trip a few times, great in early spring if you want to stay hi and have good weather. Yes you do need to be fit or you will suffer, one of my friends did it with us and really suffered as he had not trained much. I would suggest a few two/three day tours whilst out for a ski holiday if you can spare the time to prepare well, but it is great fun. Hope you go for it.
