Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skis to for one-off off-piste day in ADH

Hi there, I'm 6ft 0, 92 kg, 25 years experience of skiing 1-2 weeks/year and would classify myself as expert on-piste (comfortable with speed and style on any run Wink) though with less off-piste experience.

2 years ago I spent an off-piste week in Chamonix with a French activity holiday organisation (UCPA- highly recommended- approx 500 euros for accom/food/5 full days of lessons/ski hire/full lift pass/off piste equipment). We got given what I think was 2006 Rossignol B3s (green at front, white at back) that seemed to work well off-piste in that they tended to plough through all sorts of surfaces and float quite well, not great grip on ice though.

My skis are 2007 Crossmax V12s that are great on piste and quite versatile though with a 69 waist don't float as well as the B3. So I guess for a day with a guide trying some off-piste routes would be good to hire some off-piste skis.

Is the B3 as good as it gets for this purpose or are there other skis commonly available for hire that are worth trying with perhaps better edge hold but just as good off-piste performance?

Hey Dr. Will,

Over the New Year, a friend of mine who normally skis on 69mm-waisted K2s tried the new B3. He liked them quite a lot - found it easier to initiate turns than he had feared.

He also tried the K2 Apache Recon (I think - anyway, the K2 model which is closest in dimensions to the B3). He liked those too, but they were much heavier.

This year's B3 model also looks really cool - much better than in previous years.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

unless things have changed, the ski hire choice isn't the greatest in ADH. I found B3s pretty dull. Maybe look out for some Dynastar Mythic Riders?

Dynastar Legend 8000's are usually pretty easy to get hold of at the hire chains and definitely upto the job.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

8000's and Recons will be much better than you Crossmax and they will have a good piste performance as well.

The old B3's ( the ones you tried ) are decent, but if you find them, get the 8800's. The K2's..Recon and Outlaw, will be heavy with rental bindings but will do the job.

I'd take a list of all the above.... plus any Scott Mission from 05-08, Monsters 82 and 88. Movement Spark and maybe Thunders.

Almost anything new Black Diamond, esp Kilowatts and Havocs, Stockli Stormriders and Snakes, esp the BC... Public Enemy.
If you go twin, take a lenght up as they tend to ski short.

If the snow is really good then go as wide as you dare, if it is changeable I'd stick between 78-90 unless you know different

Oh..and defo any Mantra.... Dark Grey topsheet is circ 05, Red is 06-07 and the new one is ..well, you'll know it as it is a wider ski with jazzy graphics
