Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Absolute Beginner - Chamonix

Our trip to Chamonix on the 27th January has had a late addition.

We have somone who has never skied before, total beginner.

I'd normally just point him at a ski school but we're only there for 4 days, Mon - Thu, and they normally run weekly groups.

Anyone got any suggestions.

private lessons. Or your beginner is going to have a miserable time. And others to take it in turns to meet up with your beginner after their lesson, have a snack, help them practice their snowploughs etc.

bladeskier, Why not get him to a dry slope or Realli-ski in Canterbury for some quick lessons before he goes, then he might be able to join in with the group lessons, or certainly get more benefit from the private lessons in resort.

bladeskier, If you're friend has plenty of money, get some private lessons with the BASS school. There's a couple of gentle areas for beginners, Les Planards not far from the centre of Chamonix, at Agenterre and the foot of the Brevent gondola. Unfortunately, these areas are somewhat disjointed with regards to skiing with other more advanced skiers.

pam w, to be honest it's a right pain in the bum. The rest are upper int and the thought of having to come down the mountain and meet him for lunch every day is not good.

Having said that he's a great guy and I didn't want to say no.

He hasn't booked his flights yet so I am tempted to say private lessons AM and PM or you're not coming. We can meet him at lunch if we plan in advance.

Is that too mean ?

Spyderman, I've used the Realli-ski in Canterbury and been very impressed, he lives in Dartford so he's not a million miles away. I'll see if I can tempt him.

Hywel, thanks for the link, just phoned BASS and it's £105 for a 2 hour lesson Shocked Shocked

I think I'll teach him at those prices wink

bladeskier, I don't think it's too mean. Doesn't need to be all day though two hours a day with practice time will be more than enough. Remember also that total beginners tend to be extremely inefficient and get knackered easily. So a couple of hours on skis, a nice lunch with mates and home for a kip is often a good recipe.

I'd suggest www.evolutiuon2.com - simply as I've never used BASS Chamonix.

bladeskier, I've been in this situation too.

Two things I'd say, first he needs to appreciate that you guys have done him a favour having him along and that he'll have to pretty self sufficient. Is he a pretty independent guy? Chamonix is obviously a tough place to be in his situation and very impractical to try to meet up in the valley

2nd thing, as others have said is try to get him to a dry slope / snowdome before hand, it will make all the diference for him to at least get some skis on his feet beforehand so that maybe he can do a little practice on his own after lessons in Cham.

Still, on the plus side, with the right attitude he just might have the time of his life and fall in love with skiing like we all have - and there are a few bars in Cham as I understand it if it doesn't work out...

Let us know how it goes afterwards Smile

bladeskier, I have just looked on the BASS web site and they do a beginners two day package 2 days 3 hours each for £90, I think they use the Savoy nursery slope below Brevent. There is also nursery area at Brevent with a slow drag.

jbob, they do, but only if they have enough for a group on the day you want to start.

No other bookings so far on the day we want.

bladeskier, Dont be put off, everyone has to start sometime and the first couple of times I went were great fun. Despite its hard core image cham is a great place to learn with 5 valley bottom beginners areas and easy slopes at le Tour and Flegere/Brevent. I think you are right though dont try and teach him yourself.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

bladeskier, another idea - can you get another pita beginner, so they can keep each other amused? But yes, if he's got the right attitude he should be able to join a beginner group after a couple of lessons in the UK - but would recommend one of the ski schools that do small groups.

Twice on an indoor snow slope in the UK and ski school with EVO2 in Chamonix (office in Ogiers Rue Dr Pacard +33 450 55 93 03 http://www.alpineanswers.co.uk/skischools/show/8528 ) he'll meet people, they're an English outfit and he'll be with others during the day of a similar standard. He'll have a good time and so will you. They're much better than the disorganised ESF schools. Great thing about Cham is that it's easy for him to get around from area to area on the busses or train. You can meet up in the MBC every night and swap stories over some Granite Pale.

In Chamonix at the moment. Les Planards has been hit by rain in the valley. so the best place to learn is la Vormaine, near Le Tour in Argentiere. This is higher and has good snow at the moment. It is a nice wide area seperated from the main ski area, so is ideal for first steps.....
