Just back from Val Thorens, pistes holding up well thanks to a combination of low temps overnight, assiduous piste management and snow cannons to top up the hard packed and occasionally thin pistes - glorious sunshine made for an excellent half term with surprisingly few queues. Off piste heavily tracked and off piste cut throughs to top of resort (Balcons) getting patchy and very moguly. Pack an extra tube of sun block and fashionable shades

Is there any snowheads out there at the moment that can tell how the conditions are like?

dave_wick, I'm heading out there on the 14th too, so have been keeping a keen eye on proceedings....
Have a look at the webcams on the VT homepage and they look as if its snowing....also if you hover over the Weather/snow option it displays "Heavy Snow"....surely thats a good sign!
The amazingly accurate metcheck and snow-forecast also have varying amounts of snow forecast for the next week or so....things are looking up!
...It would be night to get an update from someone in resort though.

Last night 2 cm and this afternoon 3 cm.
Temperature has dropped more then 10 degrees.
The rest of the snow will come from the snowcanons.
Good skiing possible between 2300 and 3000 m.

I understand that VT is prone to high winds and consequential lift closures. We're out in just over a week and I'm monitoring weather conditions. Is there a rule of thumb that says above certain wind speeds/direction lift closures will be likely?
