Poster: A snowHead
|
Right people I've made a decision. After all morning of looking at fresh snow on the net: I'm off to the Alps in mid January to find some work.....
However thats as far as my decision has made it! Need some help from you specialists,
- where should I go?
- where should I stay?
- and whats the best way of getting there?
I cant wait to hear suggestions, gotta book some tickets before the prices get any higher!!
Thanks again in advance,
Ed

Tell us what sort of skiing you want (blues, blacks, off-piste, steep and deeep) and what sort of facilities you would like to find in the resort (nightlife?) - and what sort of skills you might offer workwise.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

plym, first take a look at the resorts in the snowbase dropdown above.
What country you like? What skiing you like?

What languages do you speak? That might help narrow down the country .. even in the resorts that are over-run with English speakers, it does help to speak the local language when you are job-hunting.
And as snowball says, depends on skiing/nightlife you want, so that you can narrow down the resort
If you can get a job with a Tour Op before you go, then they will usually arrange to get you to resort and your accommodation.
Of if you can get a job with a bar, shop etc in resort, they may provide accommodation for you.
Are you planning on turning up in resort and then finding a job?

Right you are...
I would prefer to be in France as I only speak English and French (and the French isn't fluent) I'm also after a resort with a large range of skiing, something like Val D'isere where you find most things. Nightlife would be good news, and I wouldn't be too fussed if I found myself in a French speaking resort.
As for the work, I'm not qualified to the teeth so looking for something like waitering, hotel work, bar work, housekeeping etc etc
thanks again

plym, bar work will prob be impossible to get in mid-Jan.
You may be able to land a tour operator job for chalet host type work, as they are prob the most likely types to do a runner after Christmas !
But you won't get much of a say about which resort to go to, but at least you won't have accommodation/transport to arrange (and finance!!). So you should start ringing/emailing every tour op you can think of, not just the ones advertising on natives.

plym, ahhh. Then yr looking at any of the whopping big purpose built massive interconnected resorts in France - loads of extensive skiing, usually good nightlife, and you'll need your english as Brits love these kinds of resorts to bits.
Three Valleys. i.e. Courchevel (any of 1850, 1650, 1550 and the satelite villages), Meribel/Motteret (and any of it's satelite villages), and Val Thorens (and it's satelites).
You know about Val D - also consider La Plagne, or Avoriaz, or.... hell, just nab snow holiday brochures from Lunn Polly or get yerself a copy of "The Good Skiing and Snowboarding Guide" and pick out the resorts with enormous interconnected piste networks. Arrange a job ahead of time via natives.co.uk, or alternatively pitch up and pray. Simple as that, really.

Er...sorry, but you will be when you can't get a job because you don't speak fluent French. French speaking resorts necessarily require staff to speak profficent french as their customers are predominantly French. Hence the definition as a "French speaking" resort....
For all other info, use natives.co.uk
Good luck.
