So I've only tried this once before and last time I'm pretty sure it went wrong.
Last time I tried melting the p-tex stick with a lowly lighter, I think this may not have been hot enough.
So can anyone tell me what I should be using to melt it, and a couple of directional instructions if they feel like it.

i can't tell you what to do, but I can verify that a lighter isn't hot enough. it leaves carbon in the p-tex, not allowing it to bond properly. I believe you need a something like a butane torch, but am not sure.

Lighter is fine (but I use a blowtorch on v.low flame so I can re-light stick if necessary) - get the stick alight, then start dripping onto the base.
The trick is to keep the candle alight, but not let it flare up too much (when you get carbon in the drips) - easiest way to do this is to keep it close to the base, so not much air gets to the flame. Don't wory about the flame damaging the base as it's above it - in fact heating the base pTex shoud help with the bond anyway. If it looks like it's about to go out, let some more air get to it. Rotating the stick seems to help with prevention of carbon too.
