Mr.Si, because you are a Mountaineer - you're just realising it - and it may prove to be the most addictive, thrilling, scary, expensive, wonderful, stupid thing you ever do in your life...

Mr.Si, I think you are confusing ice climbing with ski mountaineering. Ice climbing is - silly, dangerous, very dangerous, can involve separation of left hand side of body from right hand side which I understand can be a bit nippy.
Ski mountaineering is marvellous and involves skiing in places few people get to. And can be relatively safe. And not so painful unless you overdo it.

Mr.Si, I've been ice climbing for approx 15 years (not to any great standard though) in the UK, Rockies and Alps. A great beginner venue is Ceillac in France, easy grade 850ft waterfalls with tree belays and easy paths down. It even has a free standing pillar which is an easy WI5 to 4 depending on conditions. La Grave is also fantastic and both of these venues also have skiing (la Grave is walk in from your apartment too).
As said, mountaineering is different to pure ice, much harder work and longer to walk

And I am looking for partners to go climbing with as I haven't been for about 3 years - damn skiing seems to have taken over. I have taken beginners before and had them leading by their second day. Also have never lost one

David Murdoch, I think you are probably right!
Either way, I'd probably be scared out of my wits to do it, but I can understand that I probably will, never the less, start doing it.
So, what does one need for ski mountaineering?
Crampons?
a couple of Axes?
probe thingamiebobs?
GPS?
Both do actually sound very very fun. Never been a climber though. Mad... yes

Scarpa, It was definitely snow mountaineering I had in mind originally!
Lake Louise for skiing would be nice though

Mr.Si, Plenty of good long snow gullies in Wales to learn the basic skills; moving on steep snow, ropework, belays etc. Same goes for the Lakes and Scotland.

don't... if you've got the urge, get an alpine guide and explore the world that only those who really know the mountains get to see and know.
be prepared to pay €200 a day - it may be the best money tou've ever spent...
no disrespect to other posters....

If there is a day with poor off piste snow the guides would probably love to have someone to take ice climbing for a change (a guide I go with suggested it once and some of my friends had a go and had a good time. The cost will be the same as skiing with the same guide. The guide will lend you equipment and belay a safety rope at the top. Of course the ice climbing is better in some resorts than others.
If you like it you can buy the equipment later.

You could also have a go at ice climing on an indoor wall, there are several around the country, but the biggest is the Ice Factor at Kinlochleven. They just need the snow dome to go along with it...
