Going to mayerhofen over new year and my wife has promised to buy a mp3 for xmas. Does anyone know if the ones above 20gig stand up to riding im a board beginner therefore it may suffer a few bumps. Which in this range is the most durable? at the moment it's between the ipod 40g, creative 40g. or the new sony 20gig one. Any advice?

As the owner of the 40G iPod I would have to praise it. The size and the user interface will take some beating. Only downside is the battery life is not as good as some others, although the new 4g ones are rated to 12 hours now.

Depending upon how you ride, taking an ipod could seriously damage your wallet.

As a service to sliders, here's the main earlier thread on buying MP3s and a more recent one which right at the end has Which Magazines best choices in both disk and solid state listed.

last year i decided i needed some tunes for the mountain - so i bought a solid state mp3 player with 128meg of space (around 40 songs) with 12 hours on a single aaa battery. its ok, for the same price this year i could get 256meg which would be better. i didnt really expect it to last the week, as im always bumping around, and i managed to literally break my credit card the year before.
it held up fantastically, and so im taking it back again this year. i really wouldnt recommend anything with moving parts, most things arent very jolt resistant.

Yeah. Agree. I wanted to get a small solid state one and stitich it into by hat for freedom of head movement. May get a bit cold though and stop working :-/ who knows. I would say get em off ebay as they are dirt cheap there!!!!

I got a 4Gig ipod mini for chrimbo and its the dogs....User interface is excellent. I encoded the MP3 as 192kb per sec for max quality as I am not fussed about having everything loaded just a decent selection.
Not sure I'd take it up the mountain though. A cheap player would be less risk methinks.

Philip Prior, I've got a mini-ipod as well, I do ski with it in my pocket, only the same as the transceivers, radios, cameras and mobile phones we stuff in our pockets or have about our persons I'd have thought.

My read is that alot of new jackets have 'ipod pockets'..... so clearly that is what the clothing manufacturers intend you to use! Since I dont have one and would only use it when skiing, I am going to attempt to survive with my old cd walkman

I eventually got an 20 gig creative mp3 it was great no adverse effects from me falling down mountains and for £158.00 cant grumble it holds 10,000 tracks it took me 3 days to get 700 on it. So i cant see me ever using the memory up.

you pay for the name in a i-pod not the spec. you would be better with a creativr or philips. If you want a good mp3 with lots of memory go to www.overclockers.co.uk or www.plantmicro.co.uk. iv got a phillipd hdd 120 20gig and its lasted a lot longer then my friends 20 gig i pod. and it was alot cheaper.
