Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Weekend accommodation in Chamonix - recommendations?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all, and happy new year! Long time no see. Now that I am over my snowHeads addiction I thought it might be safe to pop back now and again, starting with a question / request for recommendations:

I’m looking for cheap but cheerful accommodation (B&B or half board) in Chamonix, for a long weekend 13 to 17 March. Location is a key factor (near to both nightlife and the main lifts, and on the ski bus route for access to other areas), but as I don’t know Chamonix at all I don’t really know where to start. Looking to pay no more than 50 euros per person per night (ideally somewhere with single rooms or with tiny single supplements).

For context, we are two guys, mid- (better make that late- Embarassed ), thirties, and the occasion is my very low-key stag do (yes, getting myself engaged was one of things that I’ve been up to during my time in the wilderness … Shocked ). Therefore somewhere with a bit of life is important, but not too much for two grouchy middle aged men who might need to go to bed before midnight! We’re planning on taking the early morning flight on the Thursday from London City to Geneva, then getting one of the many seemingly overpriced minibus transfers to resort (average seems to be about 30 euros one way, that’s 120 euros return for two – could probably hire a car for the same price but won’t as have heard that parking is impossible in Cham). Skiing Thursday pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, before transfer back to Geneva for the late evening flight back to LCY. Does that sound like a sensible plan?

Any thoughts, good people of snowHead land? Many thanks.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave, welcome back, and congratulations!

If "cheap and cheerful" is key, try the Vagabond. It's a hostel with a good bar, and you might even manage to park a car behind it. About a tenner per person per night, only 5 minutes from the Zoo/Aguille lift.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks WTFH!

I've just checked out the Vagabond's website - while it would have been perfect for my needs 15 or 20 years ago (if I had been skiing then ...), it's perhaps just a tad cheaper and more cheerful than we had in mind for this trip! Anything a notch or two higher that you can recommend? Somewhere which doesn't talk about "the full-on tune of fresh funky beats" would be a start!

Cheers.

It was good enough for an old man like me, a young whipper-snapper like you aught to enjoy it!

Try SZK or David Murdoch, they may be able to help

I'd try the Best Western. Can't remember the name of it but it's right in the centre of the village, cheap and very good quality for the price.

Jumping Jack Flash, thanks, checked it out and unfortunately it's not good on two accounts:

1) Minimum booking of 5 nights (we'll be staying just 4 nights)
2) At 200 euros a night for the cheapest twin room (nearly £80 each), it's way too expensive.

So, something between the Vagabond (tenner a night) and the Best Western (80 quid a night)? Ideas? Cheers.

PS: And that brings up the thousand. Only taken me a month short of four years!

The Vagabond website is well out of date. The prices of £10 a night dont exist anymore in the ski season. I rang up to book for a long weekend at the end of Feb and they were only offering Half Board accom which worked out at 46e per person per night I think, but in saying that, Im not complaining about paying it as ive heard excellent reports about the great grub and great hospitality.

Im 38, a bit past funky beats myself, but there is nothing wrong in letting your hair down for a weekend!

That's part of the problem - very little hair left to let down these days ... wink

I stayed at the hotel vallee blanche for a long weekend. 7 minutes to Brevnt lift and 3 minutes to ski bus to rest of the valley. Right opposite the casino and the bar has a wide range if giid single malts. No parking though

Blimey, pretty much everywhere is already fully booked in Cham for that weekend, which surprises me. Eventually found room at the inn at the Hotel Richemond, which looks as though it will do nicely.
