Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nenthead webcam is showing a thin covering and radar seems to indicate more showers over the next couple of hours. Also the possibility of further falls tonight.

Hopefully we'll update the Yad Moss webcam later this pm to check conditions.

We had a good day in the end but were delayed getting started. The generator battery was flat and wouldn't respond quickly enough to charging. Eventually we used the Kassbohrer batteries to get things going.

We then derailed the system at Pylon 7 due to ice build up on the wheels and rope. Eventually we sorted that out but had to deal with several more derailments and trip outs during the day. By 1pm the system was running reliably !

Everyone seemed very patient however and I hope they all had a reasonable day. Beacuse of the late start we only charged £10. snowHead

I'm doubtful about tomorrow because of the milder weather coming in and the thin cover. However you never know ! Check the website and answerphone after 7:30 tonight to find out if we are going to run or not.

Was anyone skiing there today ?

Whitegold,

we actually have three. A fleet you might say Laughing!

However we only actually use one (and then not very often). Another is for spares only and the third is a small track laying vehicle rather than a proper piste grooming machine. We bought them second hand from Cairngorm many years ago now for a very reasonable price. Second hand values are low.

As you might imagine though the spare parts are ridiculously expensive. A set of tracks alone is over £11k Shocked We carn't afford to break one.

In terms of running costs we only have a mile or two of narrow piste to bash so we don't use much fuel. In fact its cheaper to run the PB200 (in the photo) than to run our Yamaha skidoo which really burns up the two stroke fuel.

Two weeks ago whilst on holiday in Val D'isere our driver introduced himself to the Piste Patrol there and proceeded to accompany them during three nights of work. They even let him test drive one of their brand new Leitwolfs, all £240,000 worth. However shortly after that the electrics failed and it had to be reversed down to La Daille because the driver couldn't raise the blade. The next night one of their Kassbohrers broke a track. It just goes to show that even with the latest, most expensive gear, stuff still breaks. rolling eyes

At least the forecast is reasonable and the grass will be frozen snowHead

Whitegold,

We were one of the last of the Pennine clubs to get established. During the late 1970s we visited lots of different places around Cumbria with our portable ski tows and eventually settled on Yad Moss to construct two 400m semi permanent rope tows. At the time we also operated the dry slope in Carlisle. Surplus funds from there together with a Sports Council grant made the purchase of the second hand Poma possible. we bought it from a ski resort in southern France that had gone bust. We have operated the Poma since 1988.

With regard to snow cover, Yad Moss is really set up to ski on Easterly arriving snow. Whilst the late 70s and early to mid 1980s delivered some big easterly blizzards since then snow fall has been rather spasmodic and only infrequently from the east. In the worst seasons we may only get 2 or 3 days skiing. In 1996 there was more or less continual snow cover between the end of January and Easter so that was a bumper year for snowsports in the Pennines as well as Scotland. So far this year we have managed 4 or 5 days.

Whilst at Yad Moss we can sometimes get upwards of 150 skiers on the slope this does require good cover, good weather falling over a weekend and at least 2 days warning for people to find out. It normally also requires snow low down to remind people that there may be skiing high up !

Raise, in the Lake District, on the otherhand is much higher and more reliable but even when the conditions are good there it seems that not many people are prepared to make the effort, unlike 20 years ago.

I suspect as Winterhighland sometimes points out about Scottish skiing, it is probably not climate change that is going to end skiing in England - just Apathy rolling eyes

Peter S, Thanks. Good info.

Britain's Winter resorts appear to be suffering the same challenges as their Summer ones.

Namely, unpredictable domestic weather and cheap foreign travel.

The cybermoor webcams are showing a good fall this morning. With more snow likely this afternoon there is a possibility of some skiing tomorrow. Little Angel

Raise has also received a covering this morning and since it has largely held onto its base there is a good chance of action there over the coming days.

The news from YM is that there isn't sufficient snow for skiing at the moment. However it wouldn't take much more and if we get some showers overnight we may run tommorrow.

The website and snowline will be updated probably around 7:45am.
