Gstaad NYE 2007
Happy New Year from the weatherHead who's pleased to report that the new year seems to have brought a dusting of new snow to the Alps helping to refresh conditions at this busy time... however conditions are starting to look a little patchy on the lower slopes, many relying on artificial snow to maintain cover, and so although not desperately needed quite yet, a huge storm like the one that has been hitting Fernie and Mount Baker would be very welcome, especially for those European snowHeads who like to ski off piste. Fortunately this hasn't stopped many people enjoying their Christmas and New Year's breaks in the mountains.

French resorts have benefited from a few centimetres of new snow improving the on piste conditions, and although apparently some patches of decent off piste can still be found, local knowledge is essential to find the best of it. In Les Arcs the pistes are in good condition, however a few hard patches meant that they stop short of being perfect, and apparently "hero snow" can still be found in a few places off piste. Chatel has had between 10-15cm of new snow, and both on and off piste is described as lovely. Unsurprisingly conditions in Val Thorens seem to be holding up best out of the Three Valleys resorts, although the whole area has benefited from a sprinkling of new snow. In L'Espace Killy Val d'Isere and Tignes have good skiing, however the lower areas of the resort are starting to become a little icy and scraped off in places although snow cover is far better than at this time last year. Les Deux Alpes has also had some fresh snow, with good skiing down the Cretes level. Elsewhere in France, La Rosiere and Serre Chevalier are holding up well, again helped by a little new snow.

In Switzerland conditions are similar, in Laax the snow is holding up well higher up the mountain, but lower down it is icy with patches of grass showing through away from the pistes. Even higher up the off piste is frozen solid. The pistes in Zermatt are still in good nick being described as "hero snow" by one recent visitor, although apparently the off piste is a bit thin and patchy in places. Gstaad has superb skiing on piste, as shown by the lovely pictures.

It's much the same story in Austria, with reports of good skiing higher up in Kitzbuehel and the surrounding areas, but icy patches, and some bare pistes on the lower slopes. Schladming, Saalbach and The Arlberg, have all benefited from the recent light snowfall, and continue to offer good skiing.

Over there, on the other side of the Atlantic the snow in Whistler is described as "good, but not great" with more snow forecast, unfortunately in conjunction with the possibility of rain at resort level. However in a huge turnaround Fernie has been the beneficiary of prolonged heavy snowfall, much to the delight of two very exciteable snowHeads who are currently out there enjoying powder skiing and faceshots. Tahoe conditions continue to improve, with a foot of new snowfall at higher levels.

Unfortunately the weatherHead is sad to say that there is no update from Japan or Scotland this week. An up to date report of conditions in some big resorts such as Verbier and La Plagne to name two that jump to mind are also lacking. The weatherHead would be very appreciative of any help that any snowHeads in these areas may be able to offer.

The outlook for the coming week is uncertain, with the frightening possibility of Foehn winds, so a snowdance may well be in order. Please feel free to discuss how to go about this here. Links to webcams here.
