Poster: A snowHead

There seems to be a trend for small baskets on ski poles these days which is a pain when you are trying to get up after a fall in fresh snow as they punch straight through giving little or no support.
Are there bigger/wider baskets available that i could fit to mine?

Do you then have older poles having larger baskets? Put them on the new poles!
Or just find any older poles with bigger baskets?
(I've actually have different poles for back country (x-c) use . They do have giant baskets. But I've thought about putting them on my alpine poles. Perhaps try not to fall too often in fresh snow? )

cc_7up, you will probably find that one of the ski shops in-resort has a big selection of faded and dusty plastic baskets of all shape and sizes, under the counter somewhere, that you could try. Whether any have the right fitting/size for your sticks is another matter, of course....

cc_7up,
What make are your poles?
Mine are Salomon/Leki ones and I got some bigger baskets from a hiking shop as the baskets are exactly the same.

I think my big baskets were 2 euros out in the resorts. My Rossi poles have fixed small baskets so I just pushed the larger ones on top, they stay put and if one ever did fall off at least I would still have the small in position.

Yoda, if this is for real - please elaborate on this technique - anything is worth a try to prevent the stranded whale impressions that I suffer from (please don't all laugh at me next year - or take a video!!!!)

Megamum, I would think he means - cross your poles ( laying them flat in the snow ) then push upwards with your hand holding both poles where they cross . The crossed poles spread your weight much further than any basket can.

cc_7up,
Best in resort as they do this all the time for lost baskets... and the basket fit isn't always standard anyway

Big baskets are great. They make such a difference in a powdery resort. They're good for poling along thru powder.
I switched my tiny baskets for one's from an outdoor shop here in the UK (who sell hill-walking poles) and they work fine. My poles are branded Atomic (pretty standard basket fitting).
