Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

backhojo, you need to go after 8 March, when the French holidays will finish - much more chance of weekend accommodation then.

backhojo, In the past we have had very good service and a couple of nice apartments from Snowbeds . They and the family live in Les Carroz and specialise in the Grand Massif.

Martin Nicholas, thanks - can you give me any info on the resort / area as we have never been. we picked it as its close to geneva and probably somewhere we wont go for our main ski week with the kids as we like to use esprit and they dont go there. looks good for an adults only long weekend though ?

backhojo, We have only been as a weekend to Flaine twice and Les Carroz twice. Its a great ski area, ideal for a weekend. The views from Grand Platieres above Flaine are spectacular, there are some good small restaurants for lunch in and more so out of the Faline bowl, have a look at Where to Ski and Snowboard for some good reviews. If its maximum ski time you are after then Flaine is your baby, although its another 40 mins on from Les Carroz, suprisingly, and you go down into the resort from a col. For more alpine charm I prefer Les Carroz, and the snow should still be fine early March although its lower. Getting to Flaine from Les C is almost as quick on skis as by car. Ski down to, but don't stay in Morrillon and Samoens for some variety and great runs. They aren't so well linked into the main system, but are even nicer villages to stay in. We did Samoens last Feb 1/2 term and it took us 2 hours to get into the main system each day. Confused

backhojo, have to agree that, for a weekend, Flaine itself is much the best bet. Last time I went up there, just for a day, I parked in an area short of Flaine, because the car park looked nice and empty and near the lift, but then cursed the time it took, on not very interesting runs, to get up to Flaine. Especially when I lost a glove and had to ski back to the car to get another one - tedious trip down again! For a ski weekend, Alpine charm is probably not the key consideration.

If you have problems with accommodation there, it would be worth trying Le Grand Bornand. Interesting place, very near, enough skiing for a weekend. There are some Snowheads who know it very well and might be able to recommend accommodation.

La Clusaz is a great place for a long weekend and has plenty of skiing.

I'm a great fan of Flaine and go there on a regular basis. As mentioned the views of the Mont Blance range are amazing and the skiing varied and interesting, and the snow record awesome. However, I don't understand the comment about Samoens. It's a nice village and is very easy to get into the ski area via the new Grand Massif express.

it looks like a long journey though from samoens 1600 up to flaine. ??

backhojo, It is quite a trip. I would bypass it if only there for the weekend and planning to ski in Flaine.

Presumably off peak only. Took me 2 hours up and 1 hour down queing to get to & from the Tete de Saix. Lovely village as you say.

Start of March you will have absolutely no problems getting between Flaine and any of the villages of Les Carroz, Samoens or Morrillon. I would say that the skiing between is enjoyable rather than a procession. Personally, I belive the best skiing is above these areas anyway rather than in the Flaine bowl.

not from the snow point of view, with any luck, but the first week of March is still peak French holiday time. So there could be queues.

Martin Nicholas, If you go to Samoens again at half term use the old lift, we have never had any delays at all during Feb half term! Smile

steve, Which is what we did, but because the snow was so c****p last year everyone wanted to go up from the plateau, so an hour waiting for the 2 man chairs even with an 8.45 am start. We once drove round to Flaine more quickly than we could have skied. Still a great area which I love

2 hours from Samoens - I think you went the wrong way!!! It is MUCH quicker to get from Samoens to Flaine by lift - the drive is pants! Samoens much nicer place to stay (or Morillon). Samoen has very few queues with the expection of half term week - but even then it beats being with the crowds elsewhere (Flaine included!). Samoens is also at the same height (1600) as Flaine main resort and holds the snow really well due to north facing slopes.
