Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
After much searching, a long time getting fitted, and some on-mountain modifications to my alpine touring (AT) boots I finally have a comfortable pair. With two downhill trips this year I'm working myself up for the same experience again for downhill boots. A couple of friends have suggested downhill skiing with AT boots and skis. This would be great in terms of having one set of equipment, that fits comfortably.. but I'd have thought the skiis won't perform as well, especially as carvers. Any thoughts?

I rode hard all day in a pair of Scarpa Hurricane last week having come out of W/C ski boots. Took a couple of turns to find my balance points and register them in my memory, otherwise, no worries for me. Really quite liked the rebound that 'Pebax' offers off piste.
Pebax is the plastic most commonly used in AT boots and is very elastic.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Spend quite a bit of time skiing my Adrenalines on piste as well as off. OK they aren't as precise as alpine boots with a foam injected inner, but still perfectly skiable...

Garmont Adrenaline/Endorphine/Axon/Xena are AT boots made from Poly-Ether(non-amide), the same plastic used for Race boots, albiet heavy, this is the best possible AT boot for sking the piste.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Is it just me or do the inners on Adrenalines pad out really quickly? Might need to see you when I'm over your way early Jan for a re-mould.

My new boots are Endo's with G-fit (courtesy of SZK ) and I am looking forward to them being used all round. I haven't used them in anger and MK doesn't count, but just wearing them around the house, I can tell they are
'firm' so I expect to be able to drive some turns. I haven't come over from WC boots so I expect these to be better than what I had, which were X-waves 9's......!!
Incidently, I put them on for the 1st time for a good few weeks, yesterday and they seemed very very snug (tight)...so I probably haven't setteled the liners yet....
So looking forward to getting snow under them...

offpisteskiing, Which liner? Gfit or Pad lock? Gifit requires the right foot shape to last (no pun intended.) Padlock is near on useless. We change them over to our own liners quite often. I used the New Intuition Ski liner in my Hurricane, the tightest fitting liner i've ever had, i skied 30m and put down two turns and the boot felt too big!

Thanks for all the replies so far. My boots are the Scarpa Spirit 4 so no chance of wearing with downhill skiis. As well as the extra flexibility on the boot I was wondering how much difference wearing AT skis instead of downhill ones would be?

i have those boots and they are *almost* enough boot for me in all conditions. what skis are you thinking of using? the skis i use for AT aren't AT specific skis so they work very nicely in most conditions. a pair of very lightweight AT specific skis would probably not be that great on piste but it depends what you're trying to do

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

At the moment I don't have any skis. Decision is to buy either downhill boots and rent skis for downhill and At, or to buy AT skis and bindings and use them for downhill and touring. Having one set of equipment would be fantastic, but if the setup is going a big compromise for downhill then I'd probably go for two sets of boots.
Any thoughts welcome.

I have spirit 4s and pair them up with blizzard titan 9 skis and dynafit bindings. the blizzards are a very nice freeride/all mountain ski which works pretty well everywhere and the dynafit bindings mean that the whole package stays reasonably light. i used that setup for a pretty physical tour last season and was pretty pleased with it uphill and down
you can't get away from some compromises along the way though. usually it's a trade off between weight and downhill performance.
