Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiers in Japan stranded on a ski lift for 12 hours

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Ninety people were trapped for up to 12 hours in gondolas, when a ski lift broke down at the Japanese ski resort of Otaki. In freezing temperatures, rescuers had to climb the ski lift, force open the door on each of the 44 gondolas and winch the passengers one by one to the ground about 20m below....The ski lift broke down at about 10:30am, but with the gondolas strung out along a 2.4Km cable, it was apparently nearly 10pm before the last passengers were lowered to safety. Luckily, no one was hurt.
It appears that the breakdown was caused by a cable coming loose from a pulley.

12 hours! Shocked
That seems an awful long time, but maybe the consequence of being 2.4Km long.
I can't recall a gondola that long in Europe
Anyone know the longest European gondola?

I'll bet they were glad it was not a chairlift!

Jonpim, 2.4km doesn't strike me as that long. A bit of googling suggests that Silver Mountain, Idaho (admittedly, not in Europe) has the longest gondola in the world at 3.1 miles (5.0 km) and 3,400 vertical feet.

According to Jonpim's favourite reference site, the Grund-Mannlichen gondola is the longest in the world. I'm not 100% sure that this is the case, but I know when it was built that it was the longest then.

I think it may still be the longest in Europe.

The GGM is split in 2 segments though, both around 3km in length. The one at Silver mountain is 1 segment.

This makes the GGM the longest, and the one at Idaho the longest single-segment.

Ronald, I guess either way, the one in Japan at 2.4 Km isn't that long in comparison. Although I presume that if there was a problem on the GGM it wouls only affect one of the sections?

laundryman, I stand corrected. Thank you. On reflection i suppose the Roche de Mio gondola in La Plagne must be a quite long (can't find out just how long Sad )

I have been looking around to see if there are any guidelines on how quickly a gondola or chair lift should be evacuated. I have not found any useful information.
I did find this rather exciting video of a storm in Les Deux Alpes - apologies if you have all seen it before.

And Elizabeth B is not quite right: Google is my favourite reference site, as endorsed by a doctor near you Smile

12 hours sounds like British levels of inefficiency.

Jonpim, my god that is a scarey video, you have to wonder why they allowed the gondala to keep running. I thought they had Anemometers to detect wind speed and velocity rolling eyes

Jonpim, the gondola at Orelle is 4,942m long in one segment and was the longest in the world when it was built in 1995. I don't know if there are any longer single segment ones in Europe.
