Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone know anything about bungee cord?

I want to replace the bit on the exercise machine. Can it be bought say...by the metre or multiples thereof, and how do you what sort to buy to get a similar strength. Does it go by width, or the number of little small bits of elastic inside it, or some other measurement? I've never wanted to buy anything as weird as bungee cord before, has anyone else?

You can get it by the metre from b&q/homebase/etc. It usally comes in 5 or 8 mm widths, but I don't recall any mention of strength. I find it particularly useful for tying around young skiers legs snowHead to ensure that they keep their knees apart (you tie it loosely and they have to keep it from falling) and to ensure that both legs are working together.

From the 1997 Darwin Awards
Quote:

13 July 1997, Virginia) Eric A. Barcia, a 22-year-old Reston, VA resident, was found dead yesterday after he used bungee cords to jump off a 70-foot railroad trestle, police said.

The fast food worker taped a number of bungee cords together and strapped one end around his foot. Barcia had the foresight to anchor the other end to the trestle at Lake Accotink Park, and he even remembered to measure the length of the bungee cords to make sure that they were a few feet short of the 70 foot drop. He proceeded to fall headfirst from the trestle, and hit the pavement 70 feet below several seconds later.

Fairfax County police said "The stretched length of the cord that he had assembled was greater than the distance between the trestle and the ground." Perhaps the deceased fast food worker should have stuck to the line, "Do you want fries with that?"

Or even this from the 2004 Darwin Awards
Quote:
17 January 2004, Bristol, England) The Clifton Suspension Bridge, 250 feet above the 700-foot-wide Avon Gorge, has attracted people with something to prove ever since it was finished. In 1885 Sarah Ann Henley threw herself from the bridge after an argument with a boyfriend, and was saved by her parachute-like dress and cushiony crinoline petticoats. In 1957, a Flying Officer of the RAF successfully flew a Vampire jet under the bridge at 450 mph. He briefly celebrated before he and his jet disintegrated on the cliffs on the south side.
To prevent further incidents, rules were established prohibiting under-flights, over-jumps, and other aberrant behavior. Bungee jumping is specifically banned. Despite strict rules, the historic bridge attracts many would-be Darwin candidates, such as James, 22, who violated the rules and lived to tell the tale.

James walked onto the bridge, attached a lengthy bungee cord, and leapt off. His plan was to set himself on fire, cut the cord, and drop into the river below, quenching the flames. Unfortunately his knife was not up to the task. The blazing man dangled over the river for 26 interminable seconds, before he found a spare knife and severed the rope. At long last he plunged into the river, which extinguished the flames, and swam off.

James was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary and later transferred to the Burn Unit in the city. A spokesperson for the Dangerous Sports Club told the BBC, "His heart is in the right place, but stunt men usually put on flame-retardant suits." James himself told the BBC that it was a thrill-seeking stunt that went horribly wrong. After that brief comment, he demanded 1000 pounds for a full interview.

Why are you replacing it, and doesn't the exercise machine manufacturer provide spares?

comprex, Cos' its worn all the outside edge off all round the cord and now all that's there is the bits of elastic inside. The company has never particularly good for spares - its easier to do DIY jobs on it - you should see the repair by brother did with his welder!

Lo There.

I am by no means an expert on Bungee Cord, but here we go anyway.

Assuming that the machine has x2 straps (as most home machines do)

If one side has worn through you will need to replace both sides, due to use and stretching if you replace just one side the older side will offer less resistance thus giving you one arm or leg like Mrs Olympia and the other like kate moss. Not good.

You could, i suspect do a DIY job, and the general rule of thumb with bungee cord is the the thicker the cord the more "power" is needed to stretch it. You can buy everyhing you need from:

http://www.bouncingrabbit.co.uk/page2.htm

However you will need to be quite precise with the measurements and replacing of the cords othewise you will end up with and with one side stiffer than the other.. cue Kate Moss again.

Hope this helps.
