Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Beginner off piste advice

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Snowheads
I'm looking for a bit of advice from you knowledgable lot - there's a group of us going to Argentiere in early Jan and a few want to try a bit of off piste for the first time. Having trawled through lots of informative threads on here I think the way to go is to get a guide for a day or half day and see how we get on.
Question - should we expect the guide/company to provide the all safety gear (shovel, probe, beeper) or is this something we should have, or hire in extra ?
Also, will they require everyone to wear helmets ? Are they part of standard off-piste safety kit ?
We're enquiring with a couple of places but if anyone has any recommendations they would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

phil625sxc,
In my experience guides usually provide arva but only occasionally a shovel/probe and then it is only to one other member of the party. Helmets are not usually considered standard off-piste equipment.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

phil625sxc, I would agree with T Bar, but do not assume anything, whatever may get posted here. Ask your guide when you book. You can hire a backpack with all the gear in resort if need be.

Have you skied off piste before? As your title thread could mean you have not skied off piste. If you have not possibly some off piste lessons with ESF. The guide would be better for the expedition type of off piste!

Bon ski and enjoy yourself.

T Bar, the ice perv, thanks for the replies.

Roy Hockley, nope, no prior off piste experience so that sounds like a much better idea...obviously depending on price, but I'll have a look at the ESF site or drop them an email.

Thanks.
