We are having an arguement (sorry discussion) and opinions would be interesting.
I'm particularly interested in what you did the first time you went to either (or if you are still to go, what you think you would be likely to do).

II, You would be unlikely to want to ski them both in the same day, travelling between them would involve a couple of trains. I would add that in that area, travelling by train is quite the norm. They are on the same lift-pass.

I voted both and the time Iwent to Wengen I skied in both. In all honesty though it depends. If I was visiting Murren for a few days I would probably stick there, if I was there for longer I would try to ski both. It was a long time ago when I went but I remember Murren as having the more interesting skiing of the two and a bit higher for better snow.

I think it depends on how long you are there for and how busy it is. If I were in Wengen or Murren when it was very busy then I probably wouldn't ski the other resort. You can get stuck in lauterbrunnen for a while as you hit the traffic coming in from Interlaken.

Yep, I agree about staying put for a short visit, if we all base this work on a week-long stay then...

Like already said above, if it is a short visit I would stick to one resort. However as I go for two weeks each year I do tend to visit Murren at least once while there on most years unless I am being particularly unadventurous!!!!!!

Being used to the 3 Valleys, I had kind of assumed you could get from one village to another very easily. Is this not the case? We are off there on the 22nd so a real question.

Chris Bish,
It's not difficult but it is time consumimg you have to get thetrain down change trains and get another train back up.

Chris Bish, the three ski areas are separate, and you wouldn't really want to do more than one in a day.
From Wengen to Murren. Get the train down to Lauterbrunnen (15 mins) then cross over the road and get the cable car up to Grutschalp (5 mins + waiting time). Get the train from Grutschalp to Winteregg (8 mins?) and then you access the lift system at Murren.
From Wengen to Grindelwald is a bit more time consuming. Lift up to Manlichen or train to Kleine Schidegg. Ski down to Grund, Get train up to Grindelwald (10 mins) and then bus along to Firstbahn (5 mins) then gondola up to First (20 mins?)

So a provisional plan to do a day at Murren and a day at Grindlewald might be called for? That leaves 4 days around Wengen itself.
|

|

Chris Bish, If you are based in Wengen you have to catch the train down to Lauterbrunnen, the cable car up to Gruschalp and the train along to Winteregg before you can start skiing in Murren. If the snow is good you can go up the Mannlichen cable car and then ski down to Grund and catch a bus up to the Grindelwald -First gondala which takes you up to the Grindelwald ski area.
Most people based in Wengen set aside a whole day to ski in the Murren area whereas you can with a early start combine skiing the Wengen/Grindelwald area.

People go to Murren when the wengen side is open? crazy. Murren is good but only when the wengen side is closed/melted away/run out of pizza.

I Miss one option:
I go to Lauterbrunnen and taste them all!
Lauterbrunnen-Mannlichen-TOP: ~22 mins.
Lauterbrunnen-Winteregg-TOP: ~22 mins.
Lauterbrunnen-First-TOP: 52 mins.... (through zweilutschinen)
When you're based in Wengen and do a day in First... Return to KS by train at the end of the day... If you're too early you can catch the last InnerWengen, else you can just ski down the blue run... Beats the train down!
Train down.. the horror!
Train up is slow, train down is slower (it actually is... the maximum allowed speed downhill is lower then uphill... think its cooling related as they don't send power back into the network)

We normally visit Wengen when staying in Murren but only if our holiday is longer than a week as its a pain to train it to Wengen etc back and fourth while we couuld be skiing. We also find the snow conditions better and less Q's in Murren. The only time the Q's are bad in Murren is when the snow conditions are rubbish elsewhere !

/shocker serious question from me.
Why is it so popular? Is it the scenery because I can't believe it's the ski runs. Unless I don't appreciate what is here anymore, which is possible.

Scenery and atmosphere is a major part of it imho.

I like the fact it hasn't been commercialised compared to the other resorts in the Alps. It all depends what you are wanting from a holiday .

There's an endearing quaintness about the feel of a small resort with (almost) no cars and an antiquated train system to get you to the piste. On top of that, the views of the Lauterbrunnen valley from Wengen and the Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau from Kleine Scheidegg are both amazing. On the piste front, the KS/Mannlichen area has decent, long, interesting, cruising reds that most intermediates like to spend the majority of their time on. I could add that I found the ski school to be the best that La Famille Skibb has used over the years ( take a bow Ronald).
Biggest pain in Wengen is the Mannlichen cable car. Given that the other option to get up the mountain is by train, surely a gondola would have higher capacity here? I now know what it feels to be like livestock in a mart!

Skibb, At a guess, to put a gondola in would require more support pylons, amd on a slope that avalanched a few years ago (knocking out the old cable car station), the fewer (bigger stronger) that you canget away with the better.

Skibb, as Elizabeth B, says a gondola was just not an option, at least now the bottom station of the cable car is in the village center and not right up by the park hotel, which makes it far less vunerable to avalanches, uplift capacity is not that bad it takes approximately 8 mins between cablecars with 80 persons per car so 10 people per minute
The trains on the other hand do approximately the same verticle uplift but take 25 mins, on the other hand each train probably takes arround 200 people and they often go 3 trains at a time giving 24 persons per minute uplift capacity

The train is great - nice civilised start to the day, coffee at Scheidegg if you fancy one. If we had a train to Mannlichen I'd be a happy man. They should also build a branch line from Scheidegg to the Lauberhorn

Stab,
Allmend to Lauberhorn would make a lot of sense, once you pass Wixi on that side of the mountain, the train's the only route back to KS.
Elizabeth B, Wengen -Schilthorn would make a really cool chair lift - much better than a gondola ride!

Wengen/Murren was on my hit list of places to go but this thread has put me off somewhat. I like to ski in a linked area with no trains/buses etc. In fact ski in/out is the best.
I'm probably totally missing the point but on my one ski holiday a year (currently), I don't want to spend lots of time on trains.
