I'm out in California (Cupertino) for work in January and am organising for myself and colleagues to head up to Lake Tahoe for a couple of days boarding at the end of the trip.
The two resorts that seem to have room for us all are:

Heavenly sounds cheaper, has better nightlife etc. but a few of my colleagues have been to North Star before and had a great time...
Anyone got any experience of Tahoe? Different resorts?

hey truespin, it's not personal experience but WTS&S says Heavenly's biggest and offers the most variety (although they also say it's a weird ol' town, straddling the Cali / Nevada border with gambling in one half and not the other...)
They like Squaw Valley as well -- they seem to feel that a lot of the others around the lake are good for a day trip but aren't fully functional resorts as such....
Like I say though it's not personal experience, just what I've read -- I'm sure there'll be people 'round here with more insight to offer....

We're hoping to get some poker in during the evenings so I'm thinking Heavenly is the one to go for 
I'm hearing that north star is rather quiet - we'll have just come from working a 100 hour week so will want to be blowing off some steam!
Just been having a look at Heavenly's piste map to and it looks good - although the septic's insistence on only having green blue and black runs (no reds...) means it is pretty hard to see which are the *interesting* blues...
yeah I've heard some good stuff about squaw - but have also heard the lifts are pretty slow and archaic...

Hi. We were at Lake Tahoe earlier this year. Heavenly is a large ski area but aim over towards StageCoach Lodge for the quieter and nicer runs. The actual resort of Stateline is pretty gruesome but there are cracking eateries - very important in my mind. I wasn't based there but I've heard it can be a bit of a slog to get to the gondalas. Also no decent apres-ski venue at the base. I can also recommend Alpine Meadows, which was marvellous especially over the back side - lovely, lovely slopes for boarding - far nicer than Heavenly. My best memory is of having a beer with just my t-shirt on and the temp gauge at the pizza shack (literally was) reading 22 degrees CELSIUS!! Sierra is really quite cool and very laid back - great tree boarding and easy parking as it is quite small. Kirkwood is amazing - according to the people we were staying with - the slopes are more hard core and they get oodles more snow than Heavenly.
I loved boarding the USA - the slopes were SO quiet; I kept freaking out cos I kept hearing someone really whoosing close to me until I realised that I was the only one on the slope and the whoosing was my snow spray! BUT, but, but I have never been somewhere with such bad piste maps - I ended up on 'blacks' and off piste plenty of times and lost on occasions.
Anyway I digress, hope the first paragraph is helpful.

Heavenly would be my choice based on your comments.
If you want to focus more on the snow then try Kirkwood (south of Heavenly), or Squaw.
Don't go to Homewood, no matter what the locals say. It's useless. Tell everyone to stay away. They don't groom it. Avoid it at all costs. Honest guv.

for me the focus most certainly is on the snow! it's my colleagues that are dead cert about wild nightlife (although I would be keen to play a few hands of poker  )
we're there for such a short time - I just want somewhere where I can quickly get high up!

truespin, you might want to go and have a word with 3snowboards over on his Lake Tahoe 07/08 thread on Snow Reports - he looks to be your man on the ground. (and to be fair he also looks like he might know a thing or three about buying boards in Tahoe as well.....?)

Flatstar isn't the greatest - good if you're a park monkey but far better terrain on offer at Squaw or Alpine.
Heavenly is probably most Euro style (apart from the trees) lots of miles of cruisers with the odd bit of serious terrain. Lots of cheap motels within walking distance of the ("village") gondola.
Pubs and casinos in South Lake will keep you entertained though Tahoe City has a few reasonable bars and a sleasy nightclub.
