Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

GPS watch info req'd?

Hi,

First post here, looking for some help if possible.

My Dad's decided he'd like some sort of GPS watch for Xmas with the following functions:

Speed
Altitude
Distance travelled
Longitude & Latitude
Time

I'm familiar with motorcycle satnavs but not the wrist mounted units. I like Garmin's breadcrumb trail feature & feel that it would be useful for skiiing.

Any other wothwhile features I've missed out?

Budget is £60 to £100 max - any recommendations? Best place to buy? Fair price to pay?

Thanks in advance. Little Angel

Lo Steve,

Welcome.

My 5 pence worth:

Most GPS watches dont look like watches - will that be a problem? and those that do cost about 2-3x your max budget.

I use both a GPS and a Suunto Core 'watch' - but rarely find i need them both at the same time. GPS - long days out in unfamiliar terrain, Sunnto for places i know and for day to day activities - running etc.

You can pick up a GPS watch - Here:
http://www.sailgb.com/p/garmin_forerunner_101/

That seems to fit the bill for what you want. Its a bit dated and lower down the ladder compared to the other Garmin Models - but does do what you want and is within budget.

If your dad doesnt really need the GPS function - id recommend a Suunto - or an Origo
http://www.sailgb.com/p/origo_edge_watch/

It really depends on what he wants it for:

Hope this was of some use.

Good luck

Steve,

I use a Garmin 205 for running, but its has walking and cycling abilities equally as well. It is a bit larger than a watch but then again a Suunto is quite a lump on your wrist too.

Price is a tad over your budget, but not much.

I bought mine here, they are very good and delivery was next day included in the price.

Possu, welcome to snowHead s

Is your Dad looking to use it to tell him where he is, or more as a toy while skiing? I have a Navman which I wear (sometimes) on my upper arm which does all of your requiretments other than lat/long and is within your budget which is able to disregard uphill travel (in skiing terms, travelling on lifts).

It's possible they have stopped making it but should be findable on ebay.

Possu, I agree with CP, you can get a Garmin 205 for just over £100 from Amazon or similar.

Beware though, they are really just for time/distance/pace measurement. The navigation function is rough at best and the battery, though rechargeable, is good for only 10 hours.

So not much good as all-round watches, they are really wrist-mounted training computers.

Hel of a gadget mind wink

SERJOE, do you happen to know what would be a good GPS receiver and software for a N73, or a good site to start reading/looking on?

For good receiver -try to find something with SiRF Star III LT, 20 parallel channels or more. NOKIA LD-W3, LD-W4 or look for something with popular name. For software - for skiing, running, cycling the one which i mentioned in my 1-st post. For other free GPS software
http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html - scroll down for complete list. Tomtom 6 - try some torrent sites.
