Poster: A snowHead

Given the amount of early snow that Austria and Switzerland appear to have had, where would this season so far rate with previous years, only new to the snow monitoring so can't got back that far. Would be interested to hear from the more mature snowhead members about how they view this season to date when compared to previous ones, in recent years it has been common to have green pistes up to the middle of january

I dont think we should get that excited just yet and I can remember more snow (well in France) in previous years. My last season 98/99 certainly had the same if not more at this stage and it came earlier too. My first season 92/93 in Tignes had HUGE snow as early as October. I remember skiing top to bottom including the Aeroski as early as mid October that year. That year 7 people died in VT in mid October after at least 2m of snow had fallen. That was awful as it came down onto the piste and the people had done nothing wrong. I had 2 coaches of people there that day and luckily none of my group in the accident.
Its certainly a nice start, however lets hope it continues. I remember that in 98/99 the longest I waited all season for snow was 9 days. That was all the way from mid November to end of April. Snow depths were 250cm at the bottom and over 400cm at the top on the day the resort closed! That was La Plagne. I started the season in Chamonix and remember skiing the Brevent area fully in the 1st week of December that year as well. But 98/99 was crazy as mentioned in the other thread "Too much Snow??".
So in summary I think this is a nice solid start, but can think of a few as good if not better in the last 20 years.

Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France are above-average for this time of year.
Andorra is below-average.
It has generally been a very good start to the season.

Vermont is also above average.
