Poster: A snowHead

Well, another season has got underway again for me and already my ongoing injury problem has reared its ugly head again.
During the 05/06 season in Verbier I had continual problems with what I thought was shin splints at the time, and spent a lot of weeks out from sliding in recovery.
In January of the 06/07 season in Jackson Hole I had the same problem, and eventually ended up having a fall which left me with a fractured fibula. The doctors then thought I may suffer from Osteoporosis, so had a bone density scan done, but thankfully it came back showing my bone density as normal. Though they did say I had quite spindly bones for a guy. I was told it would take up to a year before I could trust that everything would be ok down there.
So a year later i'm now in Whistler and after 4 days skiing I have a VERY minor fall but my leg with the old fracture hurts like hell. When I got dragged off the hill I went for an exam and X-ray, and there is a hairline fracture again smack bang in the middle of the old callous that formed from my previous break which was at top of boot height. The Doctor reckons 6 weeks and I should be able to think about sliding again, but sadly not on skis for the time being, but instead in some softer snowboard boots to give my fibula a chance.
I cannot afford right now to have this sorted out here in Canada, so am going to wait till I get back in the UK next May to see someone about fixing this problem for good.
Problem is I don't know of any specialist sports injury specialists so that's hopefully where you guys can help me out if you wouldn't mind.
If anyone can recommend a specialist in the UK that is familiar with skiing related leg injuries would be very grateful for your input.
Cheers,
RR

rockyrobin, Are you still using Booster straps ? I have just got some and am noticing that I am getting a much smaller hard patch on my shins than I used to have with the original velcro ones, I also suspect I had one of mine a bit tight today and got what felt like cramp in the muscle in my shin.

RR - does your insurance not cover treatment following an accident? It should.
Pop into Peak Performance (Crystal Lodge) and maybe get an initial consult (CAN$75) - if they can do anything, they will, but your insurance should really pick the tab up for all treatment.

I suspect the insurance company will claim it is an existing injury since the fracture is in the callous of a previous break.

jbob, thanks for the linky. I'll have a looksee.
spyderjon, Hello mate. Sorry but i've just sold all my skis. My goats sold this morning!
I'm crossing my fingers that snowboarding may help me get some sliding in later this month. Hell I might even end up liking it
rjs, I've been using booster straps for a while now - but sadly they opened up a whole new can of worms giving me "lower leg compartment syndrome", or at least that's what I was told in Jackson last Winter. They were fine doing the piste thing on skinny skis, but soon as I started givin her some on the Gotamas off-piste I had to do them up rather tight which was restricting blood flow to my muscles in my lower leg. This and trying to really hammer these muscles was causing damage to them over time. I cannot ski in boots where my leg flops back and forward in thin air in boots. In the end I found it better to just use the old velcro straps and just do them up very carefully tight, but not enough to stop all blood from reaching my lower muscles. What you describe you did today sounds like the above. Just hope you haven't done any damage.
veeeight, Thanks for the tip on going into Crystal Lodge. I'll go have a nosey tomorrow before work
ickabodblue, Your right - they're not going to ware it this time round being a recurrence of a preexisting injury. Also it happened a few days before my renewal :/ I declared the injury, but still they're not going to pay for an existing injury recurring.
Anyway, i'm sick of going through this season after season so just hope snowboarding will give me the break I need.
