Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off Piste - Avalanche Safety

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello,

My name is Chuck Gorton, I am the director of Canadian Powder Adventures, a guiding services and unique tour op company located out of Golden, BC, Canada. I thought i would start up this post as a discussion for avalanche safety. Equipment, snowpack, guiding services. Whatever anyone wants to talk about really. Backcountry skiing is a rapidly growing segment of the ski population (at least in North America) and hopefully we can help those out who want more information about how to get out there and do it safely.

Chuck Gorton, David Goldsmith, a high post snowhead, has cracked it. But thank you for your interest.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Chuck Gorton, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the use of avalanche cord. It has been stated by David Goldsmith that that is all you need by way of safety equipment. What do you think?

achilles, I'm not sure diverting this thread into the tired old DG versus the world thing was particularly helpful, it's not like DG isn't capable of doing that for himself rolling eyes

Anyway, back on topic, I recently bought a copy of this: http://www.whiterisk.org/

Some of the layout and navigation are a bit painful and it has quite a bit of Swiss specific stuff about how to interpret the Swiss avvy bulletins, but there's loads of good stuff in there.

achilles, interesting threads. Surely only a complete mentalist would advocate not using a beeper for off-piste?

Chuck Gorton,

Thread on ABS and avalung here

http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=31298&start=40

Useful if the pros could bring some influence to bear on enabling the ABS to be a practical application for theair travelling skier.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Chuck Gorton, Interesting - we have seen some very good ABS deals over here. For us in the UK - it is the issues relating to carrying the cannisters on planes which are a major barrier. I would love to see a situation were you could hire cannisters at the base of most hills.
