Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Weekend break accommodation 3nts nr GVA for singles

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello snowHead s
A friend and I have just booked flights to Geneva Fri 11Jan early am to Mon 14Jan early am. We're looking for recommendations on resorts with short transfer times (bus or train, we don't want to drive as we don't know the area) in order to maximise skiing time.

We are 2 singles, 1 male and 1 female. I don't think my friend's wife would be very happy if we shared a twin room!!
Normally I would leave it until nearer the time to book accommodation but I'm not sure how easy it will be to get singles especially for a short break.

Can anyone recommend accommodation in a resort near Geneva that offers single rooms at a decent price or where it is possible to share a room with someone of the same sex?

Thanks

There are various hostels about the place where you can sleep in same sex dormitories, for example there was a thread recently about The Bunker in Verbier.

Hi beedeji, thanks for that suggestion. On this occasion I think Verbier is a little too far. We arrive Fri am at GVA and return early Mon am, so we'd like to get to a resort pretty quickly and be on the slopes by lunchtime, that way we get 2 1/2 days skiing.

Any other suggestions anyone for resorts near GVA that have accommodation for single travellers?

shockingmoment, Looks good and very reasonable prices! Do you happen to know if they take singles who are OK to share with another of the same sex? We are 2 friends but as I mentioned before I don't think his wife will let us get away with sharing a room?

Jo,
Drop him an email. He said that the hotel is not very busy so I guess you should be ok. Forgot to mention - there's five of us so, as I'm the organiser, I'll get the single room!

You could share with me, but I don't think my wife would be too happy either!

How long are you there for? If you're serious about sharing to keep the cost down maybe my friend Jonie could share with you for the 3 nts we are there then I could try for a deal on a single? What do you think?

shockingmoment,

Hi,

I'm looking for a reasonably priced weekend break too and have heard about Morzine for the first time on this website. It sounds pretty ideal for a short break - have you been there before? How are you planning to work the transfer from airport to resort - I was just wondering if it's an easy drive or if there are coaches/minibus transfers available and how much they' be?

Any info will be much appreciated!!

Thanks.

Dan.

Dannyboy58,
We've been just the two times, so we're not experts - there are plenty of snowHead's on this site who are regulars or even have apts / chalets in Morzine (and Les Gets).

Morzine isn't a high resort - but currently this should not be a problem........... just under 1m of snow this weekend? Plus there's access to Avoriaz which is more snow sure.

However, its a really easy drive - particularly if you rent a car from the Swiss side of GVA (rather than the French side - which may appear a little cheaper - but factor in the snow chains, winter tyres, plus - and this is the big one - the hassles of entering / leaving France to get your car .... and thats just in the airport!). For a wekend break you want speed / simplicity.

There's a group of us from work going - so a rental car (Espace) is the best and cheapest option. Takes about an hour to drive. There are transfers too - never used so either google or search this forum.

Morzine.com is a good site for hotels.

Hope this helps!

Dannyboy58, I've been to Morzine twice, love it! A quick drive from GVA, and well positioned with Avoriaz and the Swiss border one side, and Les Gets the other, a big ski area. Check your weather reports but I'd presume the worst case scenario is that you hop onto the SuperMorzine or Les Prodains lifts and they take you up towards/to Avoriaz where there's bound to be snow. A big area there and the possibility of skiing over to Chatel etc in Switzerland for the day, snow/lifts permitting. When the whole of Portes de Soleil is open you've got miles of skiing - it's just that Morzine and Les Gets are a little low, so the snow might not be good there yet.

Dannyboy58, I'm currently researching available accommodation for short break that initiated this thread. I posted my requirements last night on the Solutions Room on ChaletsDirect.com and ChaletFinder.com and I have been inundated with replies, some of which are really good offers. Most are catered chalets and all offer help with transfers - some have their own vehicles others use local companies - they seem to be charging up to max 70Euros each return to the Morzine/Avoriaz/Les Gets area. For us this will work out easiest as there are only 2 of us and have never driven in the alps before.
I am now going to start wading through the offers to choose best location and value - might take some time! rolling eyes
