At their annual general meeting on Thur 29 November, SCGB members anointed Neil Britten as new Chairman of the Club. A former Council member, sometime contributor to the Club's chat forum and a man closely linked to the closure of that forum to non-members in 2004, Neil Britten expressed his strong support for the Club's off-piste skiing traditions at the AGM. He addressed the meeting with the smooth confidence of a business pro.
A skier since the age of 15 in Europe, east and west America and Australia, Britten has plenty of business experience in IT, business development, finance, high technology, hospitality ... and with Burmah-Castrol in the UK and Australia.
The SCGB Chat Form was closed to non-members in the first week of February 2004, with snowHeads rushing into business a couple of days later. At the SCGB AGM in November 2004 - 9 months later - Neil Britten delivered a statement to members which stressed the legal reasons the forum doors had been closed. The threat of a libel action against the Club was deemed paramount in the decision.
Three years on, and Neil Britten takes over the reigns from John Nuttall, who has promoted plenty of new-media development. His chairmanship, however, has been troubled by plenty of litigation against the Club. This has been injury-based, rather than verbal.
What advice (keep it polite, please, or I'm in trouble!) would you give the new Chairman of the Ski Club of Great Britain?

I don't think so... more like a couple of hours later!
It was a crisis, or it definitely felt like it to those involved. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands of people cut adrift right in the middle of the ski season. It could hardly wait a couple of days!

No advice, just a vote of thanks - closing SKGB to non-members was an amazing piece of work and in hindsight we can all be grateful that it happened.

T Bar, actually, I think it more likely that it's because of the way their "agents" come over here in small undercover units attempting to quash uprisings against the club.

Historically, the Ski Club of Great Britain has been linked (not collectively) to the British intelligence services.
'Ski Kandahar of Great Britain' might give a clue.

Who said the SCGB didn't have any ethics, here's proof .....
Quote: |
SCGB Code of Ethics
This Code of Ethics applies to everyone who has agreed to be subject to the jurisdiction of the Schnauzer Club of Great Britain i.e. Club Members, They, whether owner, keeper or in temporary charge of a dog for any purpose, accept their responsibility in that:-

2. I/We will not allow any of my/our dogs to roam or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.
3. When my/our dogs are away from home, I/We will ensure that they shall wear properly tagged collars and shall be kept fully leashed or under effective control.
4. I/We acknowledge responsibility to clean up after my/our dogs in public places or anywhere where they are being exhibited
5 I/We agree that any Veterinary Surgeons operating on any of my/our dogs in such a way that the operation alters the natural conformation of the dog and any part thereof, may report such an operation to the Kennel Club.
6. I/We will (if I/We breed) use or give service to only registered stock that is physically and temperamentally sound and in good health and soundness.
7. I/We will only sell stock to homes where I am/We are satisfied the animal will have a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-housing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.
8. I/We will, when placing my/our dogs in new homes, provide written details of all dietary requirements and supply guidance concerning responsible ownership.
9. I/We will not knowingly sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in any contest of any kind or as an unexpected gift.

12. I/We will use the official Kennel Club and the SCGB standard of the 3 Breeds of Schnauzer when evaluating and breeding my/our own stock and encourage its application in judging.
13. I/We agree that all our breeding stock will be eye-tested in accordance with current SCGB/KC/BSVA advice and that all litters bred by me/us will be eye-tested by an Eye Specialist prior to sale. boredsurfin, in answer to your queries:
1. No questions on plumbing. No moat on arrival. A member of Council mentioned earlier this year that the long-standing drainage issue had been resolved. I used the first floor gents and everything was in good order although one tap seemed not to be functioning correctly. Paper towel dispenser slightly over-packed. A very pleasant toilet with an air of luxury, all-in-all. The sort of bog one might find in a decent Alpine hotel or chalet.
2. Pay bar before the meeting, free drinks afterwards (though I paid, and some others may have done). No sign of pink gin. Low demand for schnapps.
3. I think I know what you're getting at. Actually, to the Chairman's credit, it was a very thorough meeting with some lengthy and penetrating discussion. No apres-unpleasantness. Interestingly, there was a video cameraman (apparently official) at the back of the room. I wonder where this footage will end up.
4. No
5. No, thankfully. This is a matter of private correspondence.

Dear Mr Goldsmith,
Where in the terms and conditions of this site does it say I can't post things about Austrian sausage dogs and the real SCGB? If an answer is not immediately forthcoming I trust you will shut your Schnauzer.

I see that the Club's posted up a news story concerning last night's AGM.
I think this is only accessible via the member log-in:
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/news/story.asp?intStoryID=5197
There are substantial changes to the Council:
Quote: |
John Nuttall stepped down at the AGM last night as Chairman after 3 years in the post, and Neil Britten has been elected as his replacement.
There were more changes, with Michael Bound stepping down as Treasurer and three new Council members being elected.
Robert Farquharson is the new Treasurer, and Robert Swan OBE has been re-elected as President.
Alan Brown, John Adam and Alex Parr are the new Council members, replacing Jane Billington who is retiring after three years in office, John Poynor who has sadly died and James Cove who resigned during the year. |
It should be pointed out that James Cove's three-year term was due to expire last night. He relinquished the place on Council earlier this year to take up the new position of New Media Content Editor.

Swiller ... err ... I requested we "keep it polite".
Extract from SCGB description of new Treasurer Robert Farquharson:
Quote: |
In his early career Robert worked in Iran, and then after obtaining an MBA in Finance in the United States worked as a banker for 17 years, the last six with HSBC specialising in commercial property finance. Since 1997 he has been Chief Executive of a large propery company in central London, where he is responsible for overseeing the financing, marketing and day-to-day management of the business.
Robert has skied since the age of five, passed his Gold test as a teenager while skiing with The White Hare Ski Club in Andermatt, and got a half blue skiing for Oxford ... |
Met him for the first time last night. He did not have prominent teeth or peculiar mannerisms.

Yes, but Cleese-Palin-Idle is not a firm of accountants.
The issue we seem to be skirting around here is "Is the Ski Club of Great Britain an asylum of gormless upper class twits?"
I go back 45 years with the Club, and I would certainly say that the organisation in the 1970s was barking. Bonkers. In the 1980s it started to get real, but was overly concerned with catering arrangements in the Eaton Square Clubhouse (which affected about 5% of members). In the 1990s it went commercial (too greatly, in my view), and in the 2000s it is trying to comprehend 'Web 2.0'. I.e. how does a century-old organisation with quite a rigid power structure respond to the democracy of the internet and voice of the public?
But ... Web 3.0 is now upon us - Wikipedia
The Club's experiencing membership growth, and ordinary people (not UCTs) are funding it. I think the notion of 'accountability' is rearing its head. The Club will have to be very careful how it allocates its resources in the next couple of years.
