Poster: A snowHead

Me & wife arrive at Salzburg week before christmas for a weeks ski, went to Obertauern in March for our first ever trip.
Will probably hire a car for flexibility, can anyone recommend resorts within 2 hrs drive away, understand its not that busy at this time and snow could be a problem, so looking for somewhere suitable for 2nd week skiers maybe bigger resort not too quiet.[/i]

wingspan, welcome to snowHeads
Zell am See is a good resort. Reasonable sized town, some nice beginner/intermediate skiing, and access to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier if the snow isn't good elsewhere.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks, Zell am See does seem suitable, will have to keep an eye on forecasts.

Schladming is another good option, depending on how good you are as 2nd week skiers.
It is mainly reds, with only a few blues, but many 2nd week skiers would cope with most of the reds OK.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Are most resorts open by 15th December because in some ski brochures they dont advertise until 22nd December.

Wingspan,
You should be able to ski just about anywhere around Salzburg area. Most areas will be open then, due to the good conditions already out there.
Zell is a good choice though.

wingspan, I live bang in the middle of Ski Amade - 45 mins from Salzburg. Loads is open already - and even more will be open by then, most of it I expect. You will have no probs skiing. We have had loads of snow - and it snowed for 2 days solid earier in the week - more due this week. Snow is no problem here in Austria - we have had it since October.
The Ski Amade lift pass is huge, you could cover a lot of places if you have a car and want to. Flachau is a large ski area with good night life if thats what you are after. Zachensee is a resort with great skiing and you can go up and over to Flachau Winkl. Wagrain is another town that the mountains all link up for miles and miles.
Hope that helps.

wingspan, the main mountain at Zell is now open all week, with the exception of a few lifts which open on 15 December (in honour of your arrival). The lift pass at Zell covers the glacier at Kaprun too.
Snow is really NOT a problem at the moment! It's been a great start to the season.
Happy sliding (I'm jealous!)

Sounds good, leaning towards Zell if the snow is ok. Was getting round most of Obertauerns runs after our first week apart from the blacks, so good blue/reds will be fine. Just need to sort out out a good hotel.

wingspan, we have had a few great holidays at the Lebzelter, and have also heard very good reports about the Stadt Wien. If you decide to go self-catering, we have availability that week in our apartment so give us a shout.
Happy sliding

wingspan, I'll be in Flachau for the week 15-22 December. If you're in that area and you'd like to meet up then get in touch. (I haven't been there before but from what I've heard it sounds good)
