I can see another of those heated threads about pregnant skiing coming up. I'll give it a kick start....If I was going to be in the middle of my second trimester and already booked to go to Les Menuires, I'd be planning to do some nice gentle skiing, provided everything was going well.

We have discussed it. We will be taking the wife's skis with us. She may fancy a couple of gentle runs. Problem, is she fell badly in February this year and tore her knee ligaments. She has lost a bit of confidence !

ouch! Still, getting pregnant just to avoid having to go skiing again is a bit drastic.

Congratulations!
I have skied whilst pregnant with both of mine. Not the kind of usual skiing I do but nice gentle runs lots of breaks for food and hot chocolate and enjoyed myself. With my first I skied at 12 weeks, 18 week 26 weeks and 28 weeks, although wouldn't reccomend 28 weeks. My first was born early (nothing to do with the skiing I might add) at 34 weeks and as a consequence no one would insure me to go abroad let alone ski after 16 weeks with my second child. The advice from the midwife was do not go skiing, but my consultant said it should be fine as long as I didn't exert myself or ski for long periods of time at 2800m +. The only problem I found was that when you deciede to take it easy you end up back on long blue and nursery slope etc. which is where all the beginers areand I was just paranoid they were going to take me out on the chair lift/ slope.
It is definately worth checking your insurance, as Obsteric care can be very expensive in France, and we were warned it would not cover the baby should it be born early.......
I would just enjoy the skiing holiday just the two of you before it becomes hugely expensive to ski with kids and find childcare etc. as sonn as all that comes into play skiing becomes a "different" kind of holiday.

CarlT, same happened to me with our first. In the end, after a lot of swithering, the missus decided not to ski (probably as a result of a collision I had with a somewhat reckless (imo) French bloke on our previous trip. I was badly winded, he ended up in hospital with a broken femur and collar bone !).
Packed Feb pistes are not ideal even if you're a totally competent skier yourself.
Anyway, congrats and good luck with the little un.

In what way? The only change we made was in earlier planning, but easy enough to find good deals with childcare, particularly when they're young and you can go off-season. Certainly don't let kids stop you ski-ing - ours have been with us since they were 3 months old

Boris, Totally agree with you as ours had his first trips last season at 9 weeks and 13 weeks. This season he will be just one and has 4 trips planned with the plastic skis already (thanks to Boredsurfin). Have kids will ski(or bboard in our case) we say!

Boris,
Agree totally that skiing is possible now that we have kids, but it becomes a much more planned event ( we always used to do a last minute thing).
Also rather than hitting the lifts at 8am and not stopping till last lift we tend to finish a little early to spend some time skiing with the kids after all it is a family holiday for us. No more krazy kangaruh for us!
Also if you have very little ones (under 1) you need to find nannies and although there are many resorts which have childcare we have always preferred english speaking which means you limit yourself to a few resorts with UK nanny agencies, take your own or go for an operator specialising in childcare.
I also tend to limit our ski trips with kids to europe rather than US or canada and try and go to resorts with short (ish) transfers or self drive.
Completely agree with the motto of "have children will ski", but our ski holidays changed significantly after kids and often require military precision

Same thing happen to us last year..My wife was 32 weeks pregnant (our second) and we were is Les Menuires (Les Buryeres end). This year we're taking a 10 month old with us!!!
It was fantastic...the only downer was the no drink bit for her (I tried to cover her drinking allowance) but she had a very relaxing time with the odd walk, there is a pool and she went for massages..
We did have a problem getting insurance after 32 weeks (28weeks seemed the standard cut off) even if she wasn't skiing..

CarlT, well done you guys - make the most of it - agree with Nick L. Just start late and finish early and avoid the busy times.
Pregnancy often seems to divide into 3 stages
1) Too sick
2) Too full of energy
3) Too big and bored
hopefully you will be in stage 2) at the time!

Thank you all for your kind words. As we are driving down, her skis will be in the car. She can then decide. We are staying at Club Med, so I will have people to ski with (I like skiing on my own anyway).
Mrs CarlT is also into photography so will use her liftpass to get up the mountains to take photos !

CarlT, so how many weeks will she be in Feb? If she is fit and healthy she should be fine. I took doctors advice and she said if you feel ok go for it. Oh and I board these days not ski

My wife is also pregnant at the moment (with number 2) - we decided not to go this year...my wife is fit, and a reasonable boarder and I guess she decided it wasn't that critical to go much as she loves it. (I still get to go with the lads so I wasn't about to put on the pressure).
However, its interesting to hear the comments on this page, I expected there to be more doom mongering but this all seems very balanced, (typical of Snowheads i find!) and has even made me wonder whether we were a little hasty in our decision!
We're both boarders, I wondered if anyone considered that this would make a difference ( to boarding while pregnant, not to anything else!)?

The bos skied at 14 weeks and her friend at 20 weeks. Her friend is a gentle cruiser anyway. Both loved the skiing but both hated laying off the booze

CarlT, Congratulations and I know how you feel. We are going ski ing in the 1st week of Jan because my eldest daughter's school is having an extra week off as they are moving to a new site. So a good time to go ski ing as it will be cheaper for me, the other half and two children. Yesterday we discovered.... Wife keen not to tell anyone in case things do not work out but talked to her GP yesterday who said "can you ski" Yes, then "why even ask you will be fine".
My wife did not ski the last time she was pregnant though, this time she is more laid back about it. We shall see in Jan

Yes, it would make a difference for me, but maybe only because I'm a competent skier but rubbish boarder. When you catch a front edge, boarding, you can slam down straight onto your front with a lot more force than I' can imagine ever doing, skiing gently on piste. I wouldn't personally board whilst pregnant, because of that risk. I windsurfed at 8 months, but that gives you a soft landing in comparison! And I only used the small sail.

chrisb, not sure which is most deserving of congratulations, having another baby, or being able to take the family skiing out of school holidays. Congratulations, either way, have a great time. Kruisler, Ha ha. Not too funny when I'm up early get organised in order to go and baby sit two grandchildren for a week so that my daughter in law can get work as a supply teacher without having to pay for childcare.

How about this:
1. Your wife goes shopping and drinking coffee with other ladies
2. You go skiing good powder with guys and take 5-10 bottles of beers in afterski
3. Next day you bring tons of chocolate and candies for your wife..
Worked fine with my wife
Oh, congratulations! I almost forgot.. It is fantastic. I am happy for you.

dilipv, welcome to Snowheads.
rayscoops, don't stop giving up your seat! The very worst thing when you are pregnant is just standing there, feeling that your entire body is getting stuck in lumps down your legs. Skiing is nothing like so uncomfortable as standing on a crowded commuter train! And, of course, not all pregnant ladies feel well enough to go skiing, and even those who do ski in the earlier stages probably don't when they are getting very big. I did windsurf when very big, but that doesn't require so much special clothing! FWIW I always offer seats to pregnant women - not that I spend much time on commuter trains these days, thank goodness.
